Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent to join a highly regarded Am Law 100 firm. This position is available in Charlotte, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New York, New York; San Francisco, California; Silicon Valley, California; or Washington, D.C.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a Patent Agent with 2+ years of experience and a strong technical background in computer science or electrical engineering to join a nationally recognized Intellectual Property practice. The role focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications for cutting-edge technologies while collaborating directly with inventors and attorneys.
Key Responsibilities

Prepare, draft, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications involving emerging technologies.

Conduct technical discussions with inventors to identify and evaluate patentable inventions.

Perform novelty, patentability, and freedom-to-operate (clearance) searches.

Draft comprehensive patent applications and respond to Office Actions before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Work closely with attorneys to develop patent prosecution strategies and negotiate claim scope with patent examiners.

Prepare reports, portfolio analyses, and supporting documentation for patent portfolio management.

Advise clients on patent strategy and intellectual property protection for innovative technologies.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics.

Minimum of 2+ years of patent prosecution experience as a Patent Agent.

Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred or required, as applicable.

Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to computer software, electrical engineering, or emerging technologies.

Technical experience in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data science, Internet of Things (IoT), wireless communications, semiconductors, sensors, optics, or related technologies is a plus.

Strong technical writing, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to manage multiple matters in a collaborative environment.
