The Manager for Combustion Engine & Propulsion System Design is responsible for leading multidisciplinary engineering teams focused on the design, prototyping and development of advanced internal combustion engines, hybrid propulsion systems, and related subsystems. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality technical solutions, oversees project execution, manages team performance, and supports strategic business growth across transportation and industrial sectors.
Technical Leadership and Engineering Excellence
- Provide technical direction for combustion engine architecture, base engine design, hybrid propulsion systems, and associated sub-systems
- Approve engineering concepts, design reviews, DFMEAs, DVPRs, etc.
- Drive innovation in technology solutions, design and development methods, and advanced materials/manufacturing
- Guide root-cause analysis and resolutions of complex issues
Department & People Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical, design, CAE, systems, and validation engineers
- Manage staffing, recruiting, succession planning, and training for department growth
- Conduct performance reviews and establish clear objectives for individuals and teams
- Foster a culture of technical rigor, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
Business Development, Project Execution & Delivery
- Contribute to business acquisition activities, including proposals, cost estimates, and project scoping
- Understand customer requirements and translate them into actionable engineering plans
- Participate in proposal development, technical presentations, and customer reviews
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with clients to support repeat business
- Oversee planning and execution of all propulsion system design programs from concept to production
- Ensure projects meet technical targets, timing, quality, and budget requirements
- Support risk assessments and implement mitigation plans
- Coordinate with cross-functional groups (controls, calibration, testing, program management, purchasing, manufacturing)
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field
- 10 - 15+ years of experience in combustion engine design and development
- Proven experience leading engineering teams and managing complex technical programs
- Strong knowledge of engine mechanical design principles, CAE methods, and manufacturing processes
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Ability to participate in defense and export-controlled projects without special licensing
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working with global OEMs or engineering service providers
- Background in combustion engines for automotive, heavy-duty, industrial and high-performance applications
- Familiarity with hybrid and electrified propulsion architectures
- Experience with advanced tools (3D CAD, CAE, 1D simulation, PLM systems)
- Understanding of systems engineering methodologies
