Job Summary:
The Network Engineer I plays a critical role helping design and manage the network infrastructure of Visionary, ensuring high-quality internet services are delivered to customers. This role involves tasks such as network design, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, as well as staying updated with emerging technologies to enhance network performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Network Design and Architecture:
- Collaborate within a team to plan and design network layouts and upgrades within existing network architectures.
- Network Implementation:
- Configure and deploy new network devices according to the approved designs.
- Upgrade and verify network functions on existing devices including services, protocols, and applications.
- Network Maintenance and Monitoring:
- Perform regular maintenance tasks like firmware upgrades, patches, and security updates.
- Monitor network performance, usage, and security to identify and resolve any issues or potential threats.
- Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution:
- Diagnose and resolve network-related problems, including connectivity issues, outages, and performance bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and vendors to address complex network problems.
- Security and Compliance:
- Implement security measures to safeguard the network from cyber threats and attacks.
- Collaborate within a team structure to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations related to network security and privacy.
- Capacity Planning and Scalability:
- Assist with network capacity planning as needed for continued network growth and stability.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of network configurations, diagrams, and processes.
- Generate regular reports on network performance, incidents, and upgrades for Network Engineering or Management reviews.
- Emerging Technologies and Trends:
- Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in networking.
- Assist in recommending and implementing improvements to enhance network efficiency and performance.
- Assist in evaluation of many types of network equipment, such as routers, switches, firewalls, and other necessary hardware.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Project Management, Network Support and Administration, Sales Engineering, and Field Service Operations, to ensure seamless service delivery.
- On-Call Rotation:
- Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical network issues. Respond promptly to incidents, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
Qualifications:
- Experience in a service provider environment preferred.
- Passionate about networks and self-motivated.
- Desire to work in a harmonious team environment.
- Effective written and verbal communications for documenting issues and collaborating with peers.
- Ability to use drawing software to create network drawings.
- Understanding of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model.
- Understanding of LAN/WAN technologies and TCP/IP protocols.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve basic network issues efficiently.
- Ability to interpret data from network troubleshooting tools such as tcpdump and network traces.
- Familiarity with network monitoring and SNMP.
- Knowledge of MPLS and MPLS-based services is a big plus.
- CCNA/JNCIA certification or planned pursuit encouraged.
