Compensation: $25–$35 per hour (dependent on experience)

Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Mid-Level) supports daily field and shop maintenance operations at Austin Wood Recycling by performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment. This role focuses on maintaining equipment reliability and safety through routine to moderately complex mechanical work. The position is well suited for a hands-on mechanic with solid foundational experience who can work independently while continuing to build advanced diagnostic and repair skills in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, grinders, and related support equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using manufacturer diagnostic tools and established troubleshooting procedures.
- Operate a service truck to complete repairs in the field and support shop-based maintenance as needed.
- nspect equipment to identify additional maintenance needs and report findings to maintenance leadership.
- Accurately document work performed, parts used, and repair status using maintenance management systems.
- Coordinate with operations and yard staff to minimize equipment downtime and support production needs.
- Follow all company procedures, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements at all times.
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety-toe boots, vest, hard hat, and gloves.
- Report all accidents, injuries, and safety concerns regardless of severity.
- Support general maintenance and operational needs as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- 3–6 years of verifiable experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment in a field or shop environment.
- Hands-on experience working with Caterpillar, John Deere, Cummins, Mack, or similar equipment.
- Ability to independently perform routine and moderately complex mechanical repairs, with support available for advanced diagnostics or rebuilds.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, engine, transmission, brake, and suspension systems.
- Experience using manufacturer diagnostic software (e.g., John Deere, CAT, Cummins).
- Ability to read and understand equipment manuals, parts diagrams, lubrication charts, and schematics.
- Must have own basic hand tools; specialty tools and diagnostic software provided by the company.
- Basic to intermediate computer skills, including use of maintenance management systems.
- Strong attention to safety, organization, and quality of work.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in recycling, construction, industrial, or yard-based environments.
- Experience with additional diagnostic platforms such as JPro, PTT, Davey, or Snap-On scanners.
- Welding ability.
- ASE and/or DOT certifications.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Work Environment / Schedule
- Full-time, onsite role based in Austin, TX with regular local field travel.
- Schedule includes weekday hours with overtime as needed; occasional Saturday or emergency work may be required.
- Work environment includes shop and active yard settings with exposure to noise, dust, outdoor conditions, and heavy machinery.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working around heavy equipment.
