Job Title: Trailer Mechanic
Job Description
The Trailer Mechanic maintains and repairs a wide range of trailers to ensure they are safe, reliable, and fully operational. This role involves performing thorough inspections, routine maintenance, and complex repairs on trailer systems and components, while safely working with heavy equipment and diagnostic tools in a busy shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough inspections of trailers to identify mechanical, structural, and safety issues, and determine necessary repairs.
- Perform routine maintenance on trailers, including brake adjustments, tire rotations, lubrication, and electrical system checks.
- Repair or replace damaged components such as axles, brakes, suspension systems, landing gear, doors, lighting, and air systems.
- Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on trailers, chassis, and light truck components to minimize downtime.
- Carry out major body work, including panel replacement and bottom/top rail repairs, ensuring structural integrity and appearance.
- Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot and accurately diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic problems.
- Perform welding and fabrication tasks, including MIG welding, as needed for trailer repairs and modifications.
- Work with trailer engines, transmissions, and related truck systems as required for comprehensive mechanical repair.
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure trailers comply with all applicable safety and regulatory standards.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and efficiently while completing repairs.
- Operate forklifts and other heavy equipment safely when moving trailers or positioning components for repair.
- Perform mechanical repairs on tractor trailers, air brake systems, and related mechanical and pneumatic components.
- Follow preventive maintenance schedules to extend the service life of trailers and reduce unexpected failures.
- Diagnose and repair issues with hydraulics and pneumatics used in trailer systems and associated equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, consistently following all safety protocols and shop procedures.
- Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize tasks and ensure timely completion of repair and maintenance work.
- Work independently when required, managing workloads and time effectively to meet operational needs.
- Lift and move parts and equipment up to 50 pounds as needed during repair and maintenance activities.
- Communicate clearly about repair needs, findings, and completed work to support accurate documentation and workflow.
Essential Skills
- Proven trailer repair experience with the ability to diagnose and repair a wide range of trailer issues.
- Hands-on experience performing repairs and preventive maintenance on trailers, chassis, and light truck systems.
- Strong knowledge of trailer brake systems, including air brakes, and experience performing brake repairs and adjustments.
- Experience repairing air systems, lighting, landing gear, and trailer doors.
- Ability to perform major body work, including panel replacement and bottom and top rail repairs.
- Mechanical repair skills covering trailer, truck, and engine components as needed.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment for mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic troubleshooting and diagnosis.
- Experience with welding, including MIG welding, for structural and body repairs.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and preventive maintenance practices for trailer and truck systems.
- Ability to operate forklifts and other heavy equipment safely in a shop environment.
- Proficiency using hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment for mechanical and fabrication tasks.
- Capability to perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with applicable safety standards.
- Ability to work independently and safely, following established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Reliable team player with strong collaboration skills and a dependable work ethic.
- Physical ability to perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds and handle physically demanding repair tasks.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail when diagnosing and completing repairs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Diesel repair experience is helpful for supporting broader vehicle and trailer maintenance.
- Familiarity with farm machinery, Caterpillar equipment, and RV trailers is a plus.
- Experience operating various types of heavy equipment is beneficial.
- Experience with tractor trailer repair, including transmissions and engines, is advantageous.
- Knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and fabrication work in a shop environment is preferred.
- Comfort working with DOT regulations and inspection standards.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new diagnostic tools, repair techniques, and shop processes.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple repair tasks and maintain accurate documentation.

Work Environment
This role is based in a busy shop environment that can be loud and does not have air conditioning. You will work around trailers, trucks, heavy equipment, and machinery, using major shop tools, welding equipment, diagnostic devices, and hand tools provided on site. The facility operates with multiple shifts and full hours of operation from Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to midnight, offering different schedule options within that window. Work involves standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as operating forklifts and other heavy equipment while moving or repairing trailers. Safety protocols are a core part of daily operations, and the shop emphasizes organized workspaces and proper handling of tools and equipment.

This is a Contract position based out of Bridgeton, MO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $40.00/hr.
