Whitfield & Eddy Law in downtown Des Moines is actively seeking a Legal Assistant with at least 2 years of legal assistant experience. More experienced legal assistant candidates and other administrative assistants with at least 5 years of experience welcome to apply!

Of key importance in this role:
Ability to independently organize, manage, and prioritize work and projects of large and varied case law practice, with time sensitivity
Calculate and calendar court deadlines; docketing
Process time sensitive state and federal court filings with sense of urgency
Proofread and file pleadings in state and federal trial courts, courts of appeals, and supreme courts with communication with court staff as necessary - keeping current with court rules and filing procedures
Arrange for and coordinate depositions of parties and witnesses; schedule court reporter
Manage scheduling, meeting coordination and calendar maintenance with communication to clients
Coordinate and send out service notices, adhering to state and federal requirements
Format, proofread, and finalize detailed correspondence and other legal documents
Assist attorney in the collection of information and records from clients and other parties
Strong attention to detail
General administrative responsibilities:
Maintain and organize case files electronically per attorney(s) direction
Trial preparation assistance (prepare binders, manage and maintain trial exhibits, etc.)
Prepare and finalize basic correspondence and other documents; scan and copy
Send communications to opposing parties, responding to emails, answering phone calls
Prepare and submit invoices for clients, submit expense reports, schedule travel
Submit conflict checks for new clients and matters in billing system
Coordinate and support other legal assistants collaboratively and reciprocally for PTO use
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervising attorney or other party
Requirements and Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of legal administrative experience in a law firm
Paralegal certification and/or Bachelor degree preferred
Proficiency with electronic filing requirements and software, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PDF conversion software to include formatting documents, redlining, redacting, e-filing
Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism with discretion and tact with attorneys, clients, and co-workers
