Senior Controls Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Senior Controls Engineer to support and improve automation, controls, and manufacturing systems within a high-volume production environment. This is a hands-on role for someone with strong PLC programming and troubleshooting experience who enjoys solving complex equipment issues, improving machine reliability, and supporting automation projects from installation through production.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the programming, troubleshooting, modification, and continuous improvement of plant automation and controls systems
- Develop and maintain PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, motion, robotics, vision, and industrial network systems
- Provide hands-on technical support to Maintenance and Production to resolve equipment downtime and controls-related issues
- Support new equipment installations, commissioning, startups, and new product launches
- Lead controls upgrades, equipment retrofits, capital projects, and system improvements
- Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues involving sensors, motors, drives, panels, I/O, networks, and machine logic
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, controls documentation, software backups, and machine standards
- Improve equipment uptime, cycle time, reliability, scrap, and overall manufacturing performance
- Work with Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Production, and suppliers to identify root causes and implement permanent solutions
- Support machine connectivity, data collection, SCADA/MES, and other plant digital transformation initiatives
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel
- Ensure controls systems and modifications meet applicable electrical, safety, and company standards
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered
- 7+ years of experience in industrial controls, automation, or manufacturing engineering
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting
- Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation, Studio 5000, or RSLogix strongly preferred
- Experience with HMI, VFDs, servo systems, motion control, and industrial networks
- Strong electrical troubleshooting and ability to read electrical schematics
- Manufacturing or automotive manufacturing experience preferred
- Experience with robotics, machine vision, SCADA, MES, or plant data systems is a plus
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, Ignition, FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Kepware, or SQL is a plus
- Strong problem-solving, communication, documentation, and project management skills
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or root cause analysis is a plus
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a hands-on Senior Controls Engineer who can troubleshoot production equipment on the plant floor, program and modify PLC/HMI systems, support equipment startups, and lead controls improvement projects. Experience in a high-volume automotive or manufacturing environment is highly preferred.
