Job Description
The Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and overhauling buses and trucks, as well as maintaining and repairing various diesel engines. The role involves performing both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
Responsibilities
- Repair and maintain the operating condition of trucks, buses, emergency response vehicles, trailers, heavy equipment, including railroad locomotives and associated rolling stock, and all types of diesel engines.
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
- Work with automotive, industrial, locomotive, and marine diesel engines.
- Operate and inspect machines and equipment to diagnose defects.
- Maintain, repair, and rebuild power equipment, such as power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, generators, locomotives, railcars, buses, heavy trucks, trailers, fire engines, snow removal equipment, and armored personnel carriers.
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment to OEM specifications and Navy standards using various lifting equipment, hand, and pneumatic tools.
- Examine equipment and parts for damage and wear using calibrated measuring tools.
- Repair and replace diesel engines and subassemblies, such as air systems, cooling systems, starting and charging systems.
- Repair vehicle chassis, electrical systems, drive trains, brake systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Repair and rebuild broken parts and structural members using welding and other fabrication techniques.
- Maintain and repair certified systems, such as fire apparatus and bucket trucks using approved manufacturer and customer procedures.
- Operate heavy lift towing and recovery equipment in accordance with approved procedures.
- Identify and research replacement parts for order.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- Four years’ experience as a heavy equipment mechanic in commercial or governmental repair work.
- Full knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, associated power trains, air and hydraulic brake systems, and all other vehicular component parts.
- Working knowledge and ability to diagnose automotive electrical and computer-controlled systems.
- Ability to lift 50lbs.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Must have a valid Washington State commercial 'B' or 'C' CDL.
- Must meet and maintain company physical and security requirements and clearance eligibility when required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with diesel troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of hydraulics, electrical, mechanical, preventive maintenance, brakes, welding, engine repair, heavy equipment, and diesel maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Experience with fleet management and diagnosis.
- Possess and maintain hand tools of the trade to perform the normal work of the classifications.
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted on a Naval Base. The position requires adherence to safety protocols and standards as well as the ability to work in various weather conditions. Use of specialized tools and equipment is essential, and a safety-first approach is mandatory.

This is a Contract position based out of Bremerton, Washington.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $49.95 - $49.95/hr.
