Our federal client is seeking a qualified Law Clerk to provide legal research, analysis, and litigation support services in a fast-paced legal environment. The successful candidate will assist attorneys with complex legal matters, including habeas corpus and immigration-related cases, conduct extensive legal research, draft legal documents, and support case management activities. This position requires strong analytical abilities, exceptional legal writing skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate matters involving 28 U.S.C. § 2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas cases.
- Receive, review, docket, and track assigned cases and related filings.
- Calendar deadlines and ensure timely completion of legal responses and court submissions.
- Coordinate with attorneys and support staff to obtain case files, records, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare draft responses, motions, memoranda, and other legal filings for attorney review.
- Assist with timely filing of court documents and related case management activities.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research utilizing statutes, regulations, case law, legislative history, and secondary legal sources.
- Analyze complex legal issues, including matters involving novel or unprecedented legal questions.
- Research and interpret federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedural requirements.
- Monitor developments in criminal and civil law and identify potential impacts on assigned cases.
- Review and analyze case records, evidence, and legal documents to identify relevant legal issues and defenses.
- Draft legal memoranda, correspondence, pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents for attorney review and signature.
- Prepare proposed orders and supporting legal documentation.
- Summarize legal authorities, factual findings, and case developments.
- Develop clear, concise, and legally sound written work products.
- Brief attorneys regarding relevant facts, legal issues, procedural developments, and applicable case law.
- Collaborate with assigned attorneys to determine applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Identify potential legal defenses, causes of action, and procedural considerations.
- Communicate professionally with attorneys, court personnel, government representatives, opposing counsel, witnesses, and members of the public.
- Provide timely updates regarding case status, legal developments, and upcoming deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with a state bar.
- Minimum of six (6) months of post-J.D. professional legal experience or other relevant legal experience.
- Demonstrated experience conducting legal research and analysis.
- Proficiency with legal research platforms, including Westlaw, LexisNexis, CourtLink, or similar tools.
- Strong legal writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a high-volume environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with attorneys, support personnel, court staff, client representatives, witnesses, and the public.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to successfully obtain and maintain the required background investigation and security requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting federal litigation matters.
- Familiarity with federal court procedures and electronic filing systems.
- Experience handling habeas corpus, immigration, criminal, or civil litigation matters.
- Prior experience supporting attorneys within a government, judicial, or litigation environment.
