Senior Custom Millwork Engineer
Location: Washington, DC (Onsite)
Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: $105,000–$110,000
Position Overview
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Custom Millwork Engineer to join their team. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering expert with deep experience developing precise and complex 3D models. This role combines technical leadership and individual contribution, ensuring high-quality deliverables that support production efficiency, throughput, and overall project profitability.
You will leverage your expertise in SolidWorks, Swood, or comparable 3D modeling software to produce detailed models and fabrication documents. Collaboration with Drafting, Project Management, and Production teams is essential to ensure projects progress on schedule and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert within a team of 3–5 engineers, producing 3D models and all related documentation for sophisticated custom millwork projects.
- Provide coaching, training, and mentorship to elevate the team’s technical capabilities.
- Support the Engineering Manager in prioritizing and scheduling incoming custom millwork work orders.
- Perform periodic audits of engineering standards, libraries, and processes to ensure accuracy and alignment with current practices.
- Assist in developing outsourced engineering capabilities for both submittal and production-ready models.
- Partner closely with the Quality Control Coordinator to maintain strong cross-departmental communication.
- Independently process work orders totaling approximately $6M in revenue.
- Contribute to gross margin goals by efficiently managing planned versus actual engineering hours.
- Reduce downstream production issues through high-quality engineering deliverables.
- Increase team throughput by improving internal efficiencies and refining outsourcing strategies.
Qualifications
- 6–8+ years of 3D modeling experience within the millwork industry.
- Demonstrated ability to engineer complex custom millwork solutions and communicate construction details through drawings and software-generated reports.
- Strong understanding of materials, machining processes, and tooling limitations.
- Proven success collaborating with Project Managers and Production Managers to solve challenges and drive solutions.
- Inspirational leadership style with the ability to lead by example.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and Swood strongly preferred; experience with Rhino or other 3D modeling tools is a plus.
- Familiarity with AWI standards and specifications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
