Job Description:\n\nJOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN Department: Field Operations | Non-Exempt | Full-Time Reports To: Foreman / Lead Electrician / Field Supervisor / Project Manager Position Summary The Journeyman Electrician is a fully licensed, independently capable electrical professional responsible for the safe, code-compliant, and high-quality installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment across commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, municipal, utility, and service project environments. This position performs the full scope of electrical craft work independently while upholding high standards of safety, workmanship, and productivity. The Journeyman Electrician also serves as a daily mentor and technical resource for apprentice electricians and helpers. Electrical Installation Conduit & Raceway Systems • Install, bend, thread, and terminate all types of conduit and raceway systems with precision and professionalism, including: EMT, Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC), Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC), PVC conduit, flexible conduit (liquidtight and standard), cable tray systems, and underground raceway systems. • Plan conduit runs to minimize material use, avoid obstructions, and produce clean, organized, and NEC-compliant installations. • Coordinate conduit routing with other trades prior to installation, resolving conflicts proactively to avoid rework and costly schedule delays. Electrical Distribution Systems • Install, wire, terminate, and verify electrical distribution systems including: service entrance equipment, switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, transformers (dry-type and liquid-filled), busway systems, disconnect switches, metering equipment, and comprehensive grounding and bonding systems. • Perform feeder and branch circuit installation accurately, ensuring proper conductor sizing, termination torque specifications, and labeling in compliance with NEC and project specifications. • Verify panel schedules, load calculations, and circuit assignments against project drawings before energization, identifying and resolving discrepancies. Lighting & Control Systems • Install interior and exterior lighting systems, site lighting, emergency and exit lighting, lighting controls, occupancy and vacancy sensors, daylight harvesting systems, and dimming controls with attention to layout precision and code compliance. • Program or assist with programming of lighting control systems, occupancy sensors, and emergency lighting test modules as directed by project specifications and manufacturer instructions. Power, Control & Motor Systems • Install and wire motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor starters, industrial control panels, control circuits, process equipment connections, and building automation interfaces in compliance with NEC Article 430 and manufacturer requirements. • Perform motor connections including proper overload sizing, ground fault protection verification, and rotation checks before equipment commissioning. Specialty & Emerging Technology Systems Install and support installation of specialty systems including: ◦ Fire alarm systems conduit, wire, device mounting per NFPA 72 and project specifications ◦ Security, access control, and surveillance systems conduit infrastructure and low-voltage wiring ◦ Structured cabling, data, and telecommunications systems ◦ Nurse call, public address, and intercom systems ◦ EV charging station circuits and EVSE connections ◦ Renewable energy system electrical rough-in and connections where specified ◦ Battery energy storage system (BESS) electrical interfaces where applicable ◦ Emergency power systems generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), UPS systems, and emergency distribution 2. Layout, Drawing Interpretation & Project Planning • Read, interpret, and work from complex electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, riser diagrams, control schematics, shop drawings, and equipment submittals with accuracy and confidence. • Lay out conduit runs, equipment locations, and device placements, verifying dimensions, elevations, and required clearances against architectural and structural drawings before beginning installation. • Coordinate electrical installations with other trades including mechanical, plumbing, and structural identifying conflicts in advance and participating in resolution before they create rework or schedule impacts. • Identify constructability concerns, drawing conflicts, and specification ambiguities during the work planning phase, communicating findings to the foreman or project manager promptly. • Support project sequencing and workflow planning by understanding the project schedule and proactively preparing work areas for upcoming installation activities. 3. Troubleshooting, Testing & Maintenance Electrical Troubleshooting • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues systematically across: power distribution systems, lighting systems, motor controls, industrial equipment, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, generators, transfer switches, control circuits, low-voltage systems, data networks, and building automation system interfaces. • Apply logical, methodical troubleshooting techniques isolating faults systematically rather than randomly replacing components to minimize diagnostic time and material waste. Testing Equipment & Diagnostics Proficiently operate electrical testing equipment including: ◦ Digital multimeters and clamp meters ◦ Megohmmeters (insulation resistance testers) ◦ Circuit tracers and tone generators ◦ Phase rotation meters ◦ Thermal imaging cameras (where trained and authorized) ◦ Ground resistance testers ◦ Power quality analyzers ◦ Commissioning equipment and test instruments Preventive Maintenance & Repair • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical equipment and systems, completing maintenance checklists accurately and documenting findings for the project record. • Inspect electrical equipment, connections, terminations, and enclosures for signs of overheating, corrosion, wear, or deterioration, reporting findings and recommending corrective action. • Replace defective components, restore systems to proper operating condition, and verify proper operation through testing before returning systems to service. 4. Safety Responsibilities • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction regulations, NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements, and all project-specific safety requirements without exception. • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times in designated areas, ensuring PPE is properly fitted, inspected before use, and maintained in serviceable condition: hard hat, safety glasses or face shield, high-visibility vest, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, and arc-flash PPE when working near energized equipment. • Participate actively in all safety meetings, toolbox talks, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning sessions, and safety training programs. • Strictly follow all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures before working on any electrical equipment or system, verifying de-energization independently through an established energy control procedure. • Follow NFPA 70E safe work practices for energized electrical work, including proper arc flash PPE selection based on incident energy analysis, approach boundary compliance, and energized work permit requirements. • Identify unsafe conditions, at-risk behaviors, and hazards immediately correcting those within your authority and reporting those requiring supervisory action without delay. Exercise stop-work authority without hesitation when an imminent danger condition exists. • Treat every near-miss as a serious learning opportunity, reporting them fully and participating in any investigation that follows. 5. Quality Assurance & Workmanship • Perform all electrical work to a standard that meets or exceeds NEC requirements, project specifications, manufacturer installation instructions, and company workmanship standards. • Verify the accuracy and completeness of your own work before calling for inspection, ensuring all connections are properly terminated and torqued, all conductors are correctly labeled, all covers are installed, and the installation is ready to pass on the first attempt. • Minimize rework, punch-list items, and field callbacks by investing in quality the first time. • Maintain clean, organized, and professional work areas throughout the workday. • Protect completed work and installed equipment from damage by other trades, weather, construction activity, and inadvertent contact. 6. Apprentice Development & Team Leadership • Serve as a daily mentor and technical instructor for assigned apprentices and helpers, demonstrating proper installation techniques, code requirements, safe work practices, and professional standards through hands-on teaching and personal example. • Assign tasks to apprentices that are appropriately challenging for their current skill level, providing clear instruction, close supervision where required, and constructive feedback that accelerates their development. • Lead by example in every dimension of the job work ethic, safety compliance, quality standards, professional conduct, and attitude, since apprentices learn as much from observation as from direct instruction. • Promote teamwork, cooperation, and a positive crew environment. • Support crew goals and project objectives by helping coworkers when needed and maintaining a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to field challenges. 7. Productivity, Project Support & Documentation • Complete assigned tasks efficiently and accurately, meeting labor productivity expectations and project schedule milestones while maintaining quality and safety standards. • Manage personal time and task prioritization effectively, maintaining a steady and productive work pace throughout the shift without requiring constant supervision or redirection. • Communicate material shortages, drawing conflicts, installation concerns, equipment issues, and schedule risks to the foreman promptly, providing enough notice for corrective action before delays occur. • Complete all required field documentation accurately and on time, including: daily reports, service documentation, test reports, inspection records, commissioning forms, material tracking forms, as-built markups, and daily timecards coded correctly to the appropriate project and cost code. Safety review checklist, incident log, toolbox talk sign-in sheets; reviewed monthly by the Foreman/Field Supervisor Productivity (25%) Meet or beat budgeted labor hours on at least 90% of assigned tasks each month. Maintain attendance and punctuality at 98% or better, with zero unexcused absences per quarter. Hold non-productive/downtime under 5% of total hours worked, verified monthly. Job cost labor reports and daily time tracking; reviewed monthly by the Foreman/PM Quality (25%) Achieve a first-pass inspection success rate of at least 95% on assigned work each quarter. Hold rework attributable to workmanship below 3% of hours worked. Contribute zero punch-list items attributable to personal workmanship on at least 90% of completed assignments, with full NEC code compliance on every inspected task. Inspection logs, punch-list tracking, QC checklist; reviewed monthly by the Foreman, quarterly by the Field Supervisor Technical Competency (15%) Independently troubleshoot and resolve at least 90% of assigned technical issues without supervisory escalation, verified quarterly. Complete assigned commissioning/start-up tasks with zero callbacks attributable to commissioning error over the review period. Foreman technical assessment and callback log; reviewed quarterly by the Foreman/Field Supervisor Teamwork & Professionalism (10%) Contribute directly to at least 1 apprentice's skill development (demonstration, mentoring, or task sign-off) per quarter. Maintain a customer/GC satisfaction rating of at least 4 out of 5 on any surveyed interactions, with zero substantiated communication or accountability complaints per quarter. Apprentice development log, customer/GC feedback, foreman observation; reviewed quarterly by the Foreman Required Qualifications Licensing • State Journeyman Electrician License (or equivalent) as required by applicable jurisdiction current and in good standing. • Valid driver’s license. Education • Completion of a state-approved or NJATC-affiliated electrical apprenticeship program (or equivalent 4–5 year structured apprenticeship). • Technical school training or trade school diploma is a meaningful additional qualification.
