This is an on-site position requiring a minimum of four days per week at our Reston Headquarters, Central Services Facility.

Position Overview

At RA, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We are actively seeking anArboristto join our team! The primary function of this position is to perform tree care on Association land to protect members, prevent damage to property, and promote the health of natural resources.

The Arborist role involves performing complex tree work, including pruning, removals, and maintenance, utilizing specialized tools and techniques such as climbing, aerial lifts, chainsaws, winches, ropes, and brush chippers. Work is conducted in accordance with ANSI standards, requiring proficiency in rigging and lowering techniques to ensure safe tree pruning and removals. Responsibilities include developing and implementing work and safety plans, operating large trucks, trailers, skid-steers with implements, and front-end loaders. A strong emphasis is placed on high safety standards, tree risk assessment, tree identification, equipment inspection, proper knot application, climbing techniques, rigging, and pruning skills.

Additionally, the role includes participation in invasive-exotic control, monthly brush chipping programs, and other Natural Areas initiatives. Routine maintenance of tools and equipment used for tree care is essential, alongside the inspection of life-support gear for defects, incompatibility, and usage beyond its designated service life. Collaboration with other Natural Areas staff is required for tree inspections, natural area inventories, and addressing member concerns; this includes discussions with residents regarding tree issues and property boundaries. As designated Emergency Services Personnel, the Arborist’s responsibilities extend to snow removal operations and aerial lift operation for tree work.

Tree care duties include pruning along wooded edges bordering ballfields, tennis courts, and clusters, as well as performing ornamental pruning at recreation areas. The role also involves responding to outbreaks of new tree diseases and insect pests such as Emerald Ash Borer. Additionally, this position serves as a mentor to the Arborist Assistant, providing training on safe chainsaw use for personnel and other crews.

What You’ll Bring

  • Prefer ISA Arborist Certification and/or ISA Tree Worker Certification.
  • First AID and CPR Certification or ability to complete within 6 months of hire (certifications offered in-house).
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Prefer three or more years of tree care experience.
  • High School Degree or GED education equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact courteously with members of the association on a regular basis.
