Who We’re Looking For
AppleTree Legal seeks an experienced attorney on a full-time or part-time basis. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience advising nonprofit organizations, including in tax-exempt organizations law, nonprofit corporate governance, employment law, and/or related areas, and will be able to independently manage client matters, deliver high-quality legal counsel, and build trusted relationships with nonprofit leaders.
As a small, entrepreneurial firm, AppleTree Legal is looking for a flexible, self-directed attorney who collaborates well with a supportive team, helps develop systems and processes, and is willing to contribute beyond a traditional law firm role.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Advising nonprofit boards, executives, and other stakeholders on a wide range of legal issues including tax-exempt law, nonprofit governance, compliance, risk management, and operational matters
- Providing employment counsel
- Drafting and reviewing contracts, policies, governance documents, and other legal materials
- Supporting clients through organizational transitions, investigations, disputes, and other complex matters
- Participating in business development and relationship-building activities
- Contributing to thought leadership, trainings, presentations, and educational resources
- Assisting with internal firm initiatives, systems, and administrative needs
Qualifications
Required
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- At least 7 years of relevant legal experience
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Tax-exempt organizations law
- Nonprofit corporate governance
- Employment law
- Charitable giving and philanthropy
- Regulatory compliance
- Risk management and investigations
- Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills
- Ability to manage matters independently
- Exceptional attention to detail and sound professional judgment
- Commitment to mission-driven work and the nonprofit sector
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with clients, boards, executives, and colleagues
- Ability to thrive in a remote work environment with a high degree of autonomy
Preferred
- Experience serving as in-house or outside counsel to a nonprofit organization
- Massachusetts bar admission, or willingness to become licensed in Massachusetts
- Strong professional network and reputation within the nonprofit sector
- Experience speaking, training, writing, or otherwise serving as a thought leader within the nonprofit community
Compensation and Benefits
Full-Time Salary Range
Compensation will be based on experience, expertise, practice area, business development capabilities, and whether the candidate brings an existing client base.
Part-Time Compensation
Part-time compensation will be prorated based on schedule and experience.
