The Department of Biology at California State University San Bernardino invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Biology with research expertise in organismal plant biology with an emphasis on structure and function to begin August 2024. The Department of Biology is committed to student success and seeks a colleague who will employ evidence-based methodologies to promote equity and improve learning outcomes in diverse classrooms. The successful candidate will develop an independent research program, as well as design and teach lecture and laboratory courses in subjects like comparative plant morphology, plant physiology, local flora, plant biology and diversity, or plant development. We expect opportunities to develop and teach upper division courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.

The successful candidate will be expected to apply for extramural funding, conduct and publish research in organismal plant biology with an emphasis on structure and function, applying laboratory and/ or field research involving undergraduate and Master’s students. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to service and shared governance to the department, college, and university. Moreover, the successful candidate will preferably take over the role of the CSUSB herbarium curator. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biology or related field; postdoctoral experience is highly desired.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biology or related field is required by time of appointment Publication record in plant biology Experimental expertise applicable to undergraduate and Master’s level research in organismal plant biology

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Postdoctoral experience University-level instructional experience in plant biology Potential for developing an externally funded research program Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students in research Experience working with students from historically underrepresented groups

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Biology has 17 tenure-track/tenured faculty with a variety of research interests, as well as lecturers and technicians who provide pivotal support. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The department has facilities for 3D printing, cell culture and stem cell research, animal care, and plant growth. The CSUSB herbarium hosts a small collection (about 4,000 specimens) of mostly local flora. In addition, the department has access to the College of Natural Science’s Electron Microscope and Image Analysis Center (EMIAC).
