Position Summary
The Systems Administrator is responsible for administering, maintaining, and supporting the University’s enterprise systems and infrastructure in a higher education environment. This position ensures the reliability, security, and performance of server, virtualization, endpoint management, and Microsoft 365 platforms that support academic and administrative operations.
Reporting to the Director of IT Services, the Systems Administrator works collaboratively with IT staff to deliver stable, secure, and well-governed technology services in alignment with institutional policies, procedures, and service standards. This position is intended for an early-career IT professional with 1–3 years of enterprise systems administration experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Administer, monitor, and maintain Windows Server environments, including system configuration, patching, and performance monitoring
● Support Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and file services
● Assist with server provisioning, upgrades, and decommissioning in accordance with established change management processes
● Support virtualized workloads using VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V
● Assist with monitoring infrastructure performance, availability, and capacity utilization
● Support endpoint and server management using Microsoft SCCM / Configuration Manager, including software deployment, imaging, and patch management
● Support Microsoft 365 services, including user account administration, licensing, and access management
● Assist with hybrid identity integrations between on-premises and cloud services
● Apply institutional security standards and assist with vulnerability remediation and audit preparation
● Provide Tier 2 / Tier 3 escalation support for system-related incidents and service requests
● Maintain accurate technical documentation, procedures, and configuration records
● Participate in infrastructure improvement and modernization initiatives
Work Schedule and Availability
● Primary work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
● Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support maintenance windows or system upgrades
● Participation in an on-call rotation may be required to provide after-hours support for critical systems
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
● One (1) to three (3) years of experience in systems administration or enterprise IT operations
● Working knowledge of Windows Server environments
● Familiarity with VMware and/or Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization platforms
● Basic experience with SCCM / Configuration Manager or similar endpoint management tools
● Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience supporting IT systems in a higher education or public-sector environment
● Exposure to Microsoft 365 or hybrid cloud environments
● Familiarity with backup, monitoring, or security tools
● Entry-level industry certifications (Microsoft, VMware, CompTIA, or equivalent)
