About the Role\n
Reflections is a daily devotion line of NextSunday Resources, an imprint of Smyth & Helwys Publishing, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Celebrating Grace, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
\n
Reflections, published three times a year, is read by individuals and small groups as part of a daily rhythm of Scripture engagement. NSR is seeking a contract editor to shape and maintain the voice, theological consistency, and production quality of Reflections on an ongoing basis.
\n
This is a remote, contract position. Work is deadline-driven and organized around NSR's curriculum production calendar rather than a weekly schedule.
\n
What You'll Do\n
• Edit daily devotion entries for content, clarity, tone, and theological consistency with NSR's mainline Protestant reader base.
\n
• Work with contributing writers to develop devotion content tied to the Revised Common Lectionary, including assigning topics or Scripture passages.
\n
• Coordinate with the Publisher and editorial team on production deadlines, aligning devotion content delivery with NSR's broader curriculum release schedule.
\n
• Fact-check Scripture references and correct citation format.
\n
• Review copyedited proofs and galleys before each issue goes to press.
\n
• Flag content, scheduling, or contributor issues to the Publisher early rather than letting them surface at deadline.
\n
What We're Looking For\n
• Editorial experience, ideally with devotional, inspirational, or religious content.
\n
• Strong theological grounding appropriate to a mainline Protestant readership. Seminary training or equivalent formation is preferred but not strictly required if editorial judgment and theological fluency are evident.
\n
• Ready to build or cultivate a network of pastoral connections from which to source quality writers and promote Reflections.
\n
• A clear, warm prose sense. You should be able to tell the difference between writing that is devotionally honest and human and writing that is merely sentimental or generic and/or AI-driven.
\n
• Comfort managing multiple contributing writers and giving direct, constructive feedback.
\n
• Reliable self-direction. This is a remote, deadline-driven role with minimal day-to-day oversight.
\n
• Familiarity with church curriculum publishing is a plus, not a requirement.
\n
Logistics\n
• Location: Remote. No relocation or office presence required.
\n
• Type: Independent contractor, 1099. Not a benefits-eligible position.
\n
• Compensation: To be determined on a per-issue rate according to qualifications and experience.
\n
• Schedule: Tied to NSR's production calendar rather than fixed hours.
\n
• Reports to: Publisher, Smyth & Helwys Publishing.
\n
