Job Title: Field Service Technician

Job Description

This role provides hands-on service, installation, and maintenance support for specialized equipment, with a strong focus on electrical and mechanical systems. You will perform both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshoot complex issues in the field, and ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently. The position involves daily travel, however you are home each night.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of equipment at customer sites and company facilities.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, electrical schematics, and hydraulic diagrams to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Troubleshoot and repair AC and DC motors, circuit boards, fuses, sensors, and related electrical components.
  • Conduct testing, installation, and commissioning of equipment, ensuring proper operation and safety compliance.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including identifying leaks, pressure issues, and component failures.
  • Troubleshoot and perform edits on PLC programs under guidance, ensuring automation systems function correctly.
  • Use MIG welding when needed to support repairs or modifications to equipment and structures.
  • Document service work performed, parts used, and issues identified in a clear and accurate manner.
  • Communicate effectively with internal team members and customers to explain issues, solutions, and maintenance recommendations.
  • Collaborate with controls technicians, service technicians, designers, and programmers to resolve complex technical problems.
  • Travel to customer sites approximately 20–40% of the year, typically for 3–5 days at a time, while maintaining a strong focus on customer service and professionalism.

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and equipment manuals.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience working on machinery and equipment.
  • Hydraulic experience, including troubleshooting and repair of hydraulic systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical systems, including AC and DC motors, circuit boards, and fuses.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and service PLC-controlled equipment and perform basic PLC program edits.
  • Familiarity with automation systems, sensors, and related control components.
  • Capability to perform MIG welding as needed for repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for both electrical and mechanical issues in the field.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with internal teams and customers.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 20–40% of the year, typically for 3–5 day trips.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working as a field service technician, service technician, or similar role in an industrial or automation environment.
  • Background in electrical or industrial maintenance with exposure to PLCs and automation systems.
  • Comfort working across multiple disciplines, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and manage time and tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety when working on energized and moving equipment.
  • Capability to adapt to different equipment types and environments across multiple locations.

Work Environment

This is a first-shift position, Monday through Friday, starting at 6:00 a.m. and running until the job is complete, with an average of about 45 hours per week. You will be traveling to clients daily, however you are home each night. Overnights will happen, but are rare. You will work as part of a small technical team that includes controls technicians, service technicians, a controls designer, and a controls programmer, using modern electrical, hydraulic, and automation technologies in a hands-on industrial environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hopkins, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr.
