About the Job:

The Facilities Management Department is seeking a skilled and motivated Maintenance Worker I for a Limited Duration role*. The ideal candidate is a proactive, quick-thinking, and solutions-oriented professional with a comprehensive and diverse background in facilities maintenance. With strong collaboration skills and extensive hands-on experience, this individual will play a crucial role in the upkeep and enhancement of our facilities and infrastructure, directly contributing to an improved and seamless experience for SAN travelers.

*A limited role is a non-permanent position, ongoing full-time 40 hours per week position with eligibility for all benefits as permanent positions, continuation of the position is subject to annual budgetary approval.

What you’ll do:

  • Maintenance: Performs routine-to-skilled duties with maintenance and repair, with construction, concrete, sidewalks, driveways, monuments, curbs, gutters, asphalts, lots, maintenance and repair of physical plant, public works infrastructure, and facilities. Assists craft and trade personnel such as electricians, HVAC technicians, carpenters, painters, plumbers, and maintenance mechanics with welding tasks and metal fabrication.
  • Compliance: Monitors and inspects work performed by others and contractors, ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations, participates in the development and implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance standards and schedules; recommends special work or equipment maintenance. Responds to emergency situations.
  • Equipment and Tools: Operates light and medium-duty motorized maintenance and construction equipment including forklifts, trucks, trailers, aerial lifts and pavement and street sweepers, hand and power tools. Complete physical labor-related tasks and relocate office furniture.
  • Vehicle Operation*: Operates and drives Authority vehicles daily to and from work sites, transporting necessary equipment to ensure timely arrival and efficient completion of repairs.
  • Flexibility: The candidate selected for this vacancy may work a non-traditional work schedule which requires night shift and weekend work; including being called back to work during emergency situations.
  • Administrative: Operates computer to create and access records, timecards and work orders, operates vehicles to work sites, attends meetings with departments and performs related duties as assigned.

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain hand and power tools, equipment common to the public works maintenance, building construction and maintenance trades.
  • Problem-Solving: Analyzes situation or factor, collaboratively generate alternative and practical solutions, readily adapts behavior or new work methods, evolving and unexpected situations. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines and without close supervision.
  • Leveraging Technology: Effective use of information electronically and related work systems.

Requirements

The Experience You Need to Have**:

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D;
  • One year experience in the use of hand, power tools, equipment and machinery associated with construction, mechanical, electrical, or building trades;
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements :

  • Maintain a valid CA driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background investigation, training, and testing required for employment and operation and operation of Authority and San Diego County physical security, surveillance, radio and telecommunications equipment.

*Driving is an Essential Function

This role requires regular driving as a critical part of performing work-related duties, specifically involving the operation of Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver’s license is required, along with strict adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations. Applicants must maintain an acceptable driving record to operate Authority vehicles. Compliance with Airport Authority vehicle use policies, including safety protocols and reporting requirements, is mandatory. Applicants must acknowledge that driving Airport Authority vehicles is an essential function of this role.
