Job Summary:

The dental assistant assists the dentist during examination and treatment of clients. The dental assistant is responsible for client preparation, sterilization and disinfection of instruments, instrument tray set up, and preparation of dental materials.

Functions and Responsibilities:

1.0Assists dentists by serving as chair-side assistant

1.1Prepares operatory for client treatment

1.2Passes instruments

1.3Performs other routine tasks in care of the client as directed by the dentist

1.4Provides diagnostic aids to the dentist

1.5Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies

2.0Performs clinical supportive functions

2.1Prepare client ensuring client feels comfortable before, during and after dental treatment

2.2Instruct client on appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g. tooth brushing, flossing)

2.3Dismisses client by explaining follow-up needed as directed by dentist

3.0Maintains dental clinical records

3.1Chart mouth and teeth

3.2Records and maintains files

3.3Schedule future appointments as needed

3.4Support front desk staff in down time

4.0Technical and laboratory skills

4.1Mixes amalgam and synthetic fillings material according to instructions

4.2Exposes and processes diagnostic x-rays and Digital x-rays

4.3Pours, trims and polishes casts

4.4Maintain dental equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s directions and department policy

4.5Dentrix Compliant

5.0Other duties

5.1Sterilizes reusable dental instruments and equipment

5.2Oils and cleans equipment

5.3Chair/operatory sterilization and set up

5.4Insures proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials

5.5Maintains compliance with department directives and protocols relative to infection control, exposure control and safety

5.6Maintains adequate operatory supplies and compiles list of items needed for inventory control and ordering purposes

6.0Miscellaneous Duties

6.1Responsible for personal compliance with LSCHC

6.2Maintains client confidentiality

6.3Other duties as assigned

6.4Travel between sites may be required

Requirements

Job Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Dental Assistant program
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED certification
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of dental assisting techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of routine office practices
  • Ability to sterilize and care for instruments and equipment
  • Ability to chart mouth and teeth
  • Ability to alleviate client’s anxieties and promote trust and confidence
  • Computer and Microsoft Office software knowledge
