About the Opportunity
An established industrial equipment manufacturer is seeking a Lab Manager to oversee a specialized testing and demonstration facility focused on industrial mixing, batching, and compounding equipment used across a variety of manufacturing and processing industries.
This is a highly hands-on, customer-facing technical position that combines laboratory management, industrial equipment operation, product testing, and customer demonstrations. Unlike traditional analytical laboratory environments, this facility primarily focuses on evaluating how materials mix, blend, and compound using industrial processing equipment.
The ideal candidate has experience in chemical processing, industrial manufacturing, product compounding, or laboratory operations, along with strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate equipment, prepare sample batches, and communicate technical results to customers.
This opportunity is well suited for someone who enjoys working directly with industrial machinery, managing laboratory operations, and helping customers identify effective processing solutions.
What You'll Do
- Manage daily operations of an industrial laboratory and testing center specializing in mixing, batching, and compounding equipment.
- Coordinate and schedule customer demonstrations, laboratory testing appointments, and facility visits.
- Host visiting customers and conduct hands-on demonstrations of industrial mixing and processing equipment.
- Operate industrial mixers and laboratory equipment to prepare sample batches and evaluate processing performance.
- Receive, inspect, and process customer samples to determine their suitability for testing.
- Prepare materials and samples for testing using various types of industrial process equipment.
- Generate detailed laboratory test reports, technical documentation, and video recordings of equipment demonstrations.
- Maintain accurate testing records, sample documentation, and laboratory reports.
- Perform calculations involving concentrations, batch volumes, mixing parameters, and general process data.
- Identify potential equipment malfunctions, chemical safety concerns, and processing challenges.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, workspaces, supplies, and testing areas to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Collaborate with laboratory assistants and internal personnel to complete testing projects.
- Follow established safety procedures when operating machinery and handling chemicals or industrial materials.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding customer materials, proprietary processes, and laboratory test results.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in a natural science (required).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the process industries (required).
- Hands-on experience in industrial mixing, compounding, batching, or manufacturing processes.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate industrial processing machinery.
- Understanding of laboratory testing procedures, sample preparation, and technical documentation.
- Ability to perform calculations involving concentrations, volumes, and processing parameters.
- Working knowledge of basic algebra, geometry, and manufacturing-related calculations.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, operating manuals, safety procedures, and equipment instructions.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to coordinate testing schedules and customer visits.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with confidence presenting technical information to customers.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot potential mechanical malfunctions and chemical safety concerns.
- Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office or similar productivity software, and technical reporting.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate laboratory records.
- Comfortable working in a physical, hands-on industrial laboratory environment, including frequent standing, walking, and equipment operation.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including lifting and moving materials weighing up to 100 pounds, with reasonable accommodations where applicable.
- Willingness to work around industrial machinery, elevated noise levels, chemical fumes, and other manufacturing-related conditions.
Nice to Have
- Experience working with industrial mixers, blenders, dispersers, or compounding equipment.
- Background in chemical manufacturing, specialty chemicals, coatings, adhesives, plastics, cosmetics, or similar process industries.
- Experience conducting equipment demonstrations or technical presentations for customers.
- Previous experience managing laboratory operations, testing schedules, or technical personnel.
- Familiarity with industrial equipment troubleshooting and process optimization.
- Experience preparing technical reports, recording equipment demonstrations, or evaluating product performance.
What's Offered
- Base salary of $70,000–$75,000, with additional flexibility depending on candidate qualifications and relevant experience.
