Tool and Die Supervisor

Oversees all activities related to the design, maintenance, and repair of tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in the manufacturing process. They lead a team of skilled tool and die makers and machinists to ensure production efficiency, quality standards, and safety regulations are consistently met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership and Management: Supervise, train, and mentor a team of tool and die makers and other related staff, coordinating daily workloads and prioritizing tasks to meet production deadlines. This often involves conflict management and performance evaluation.
  • Technical Oversight: Ensure the proper design, construction, modification, and repair of tooling. This includes troubleshooting complex die and tooling issues, interpreting engineering blueprints and CAD designs, and providing technical guidance to the team.
  • Production Coordination: Collaborate closely with engineering, production, and quality control to address issues, implement process improvements, and support the development of new products.
  • Quality and Safety Assurance: Enforce strict adherence to safety regulations (e.g., OSHA) and quality standards. They are responsible for conducting regular inspections and implementing preventive maintenance programs for all equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Inventory and Resource Management: Manage the inventory of spare parts, order necessary supplies, and ensure the efficient utilization of manpower and machinery.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements, implement Lean Manufacturing principles.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma or trade school certificate, with an associate degree or technical certification in a related field often preferred. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in tool and die work, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of tool and die design, fabrication, and repair processes; proficiency in reading technical drawings and blueprints; experience with precision measuring instruments; and familiarity CAD/CAM software, and manual machining operations are essential.
  • Soft Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are vital for managing a team and coordinating with different departments. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are also crucial
