The Town of Hanover is seeking a skilled and dependable Utility Maintenance Supervisor to lead daily operations supporting the Towns water distribution and sewer collection systems. This leadership role blends hands-on technical work with team supervision, planning, and emergency responseensuring the safe and reliable operation of critical infrastructure.

This position performs responsible supervisory work within the Public Works Department and is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the utility crew. The Utility Maintenance Supervisor oversees construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer collection and water distribution systems, coordinates work with other Town departments and outside utilities and responds to water and sewer emergencies.

Successful performance ensures reliable infrastructure and safe utility operations throughout the community.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and direct daily work assignments for utility crews
  • Maintain daily records of staffing, time, and materials used for projects
  • Monitor work performance to ensure compliance with safety standards and Town ordinances
  • Assist in training, assigning, scheduling, and supervising utility employees
  • Oversee maintenance of sewer collection systems, including inspections and compliance with CMOM requirements
  • Oversee maintenance of water distribution systems, including scheduling inspections and repairs
  • Supervise maintenance and repair of sewer lines, manholes, and water infrastructure
  • Coordinate system maintenance activities, including exercising valves and maintaining distribution equipment
  • Lead emergency response activities involving water or sewer system failures
  • Calculate material needs and coordinate ordering for maintenance and construction activities
  • Coordinate winter sidewalk maintenance including plowing and sanding operations
  • Maintain equipment, tools, and supply inventories
  • Assist in overseeing contractor work to ensure compliance with codes and specifications
  • Respond to inquiries from contractors, agencies, and the public
  • Support planned service interruptions and system shutdown operations
  • Promote responsive and professional community relations
  • Assist the Superintendent with daily management of utility operations
  • Perform related duties as assigned



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems
  • Knowledge of blueprints, construction methods, and civil engineering principles
  • Knowledge of Town codes and ordinances related to utilities
  • Knowledge of departmental safety procedures and OSHA regulations
  • Skill in supervising and leading work crews
  • Skill in operating tools, equipment, and heavy machinery
  • Skill in maintaining computerized records and GIS-related data
  • Skill in locating underground utilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills


Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting up to 100 pounds
  • Climbing ladders and entering confined spaces
  • Operation of heavy equipment and trench safety systems
  • Exposure to hazardous gases and confined space conditions
  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery
  • Use of protective equipment including steel-toed boots, gloves, masks, and safety equipment required


Supervisory and Management Responsibility

Provides direct supervision to Utility Water and Sewer Maintenance Technicians and oversees crew performance and safety.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Specialized training in utilities, construction, or related technical field
  • One to three years of supervisory or related experience in utilities maintenance
  • Five to ten years of experience in water distribution, drainage, wastewater collection, or construction systems
  • Valid New Hampshire drivers license, including Class B Commercial Drivers License or ability to obtain
  • Possession or the ability to obtain of Grade 1 NEWEA Collection System Operator Certification within one year and obtain Grade II within two years
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Grade II Water Distribution License
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Grade I OIT Water Treatment License
  • GIS knowledge preferred but not required



Hours of Work:

40 hours a week: 7:00am- 3:30pm Mon-Fri

Union, Non-Exempt Position, Some weekends and nights for Storm Maintenance
