Job Title: Fleet Mechanic

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary Grade: FM1 – FM6

Reports to: Solid Waste Manager

Date: June 2025


Summary/Objective: Perform mechanical repairs and general maintenance of vehicles and equipment.


Essential Functions:

· Repairs as needed equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, front end loaders, articulated dump trucks, farm tractors, compactors, and semi tractors).

· Diagnoses and repairs differentials, hydraulic systems, motors, transmissions, drives, air conditioning systems, and electrical systems.

· Performs tasks per preventative maintenance checklist.

· Completes records such as work orders, card files, P.M. checklists, and oil samples.

· Services and maintains other equipment such as light plants, water pump, welders, and other ancillary equipment.

· Follows site-specific procedures and safety and environmental standards.

· Performing other duties as assigned.

· Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

· Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

· Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Required education and experience: Two-year certificate from a vocational or technical school in a related field and two years related experience; or equivalent combination of experience. Experience in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brakes and suspension, auto electric, and fabrication skills are highly desirable.


Additional eligibility qualifications: Valid driver’s license; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A within 6 months of employment.
