Job Title: Security Guard (All shifts available)

Job Description

This role serves as a licensed security and communications officer responsible for monitoring and coordinating security operations across multiple properties in a busy, community-focused environment. Working in a 24/7 security communications center, you will operate radios, telephones, computer systems, and electronic safety equipment to protect people, property, and assets. You will handle both routine and emergency situations, provide information and assistance to the public, and support field security officers by maintaining constant, accurate communication and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate fixed-base communications equipment, including two-way radios, telephones, computer terminals, and related systems as part of a security network covering multiple properties.
  • Receive and transmit messages between fixed locations and mobile security units, ensuring clear, accurate, and timely communication at all times.
  • Initiate and coordinate the movement of security personnel in response to both routine calls and emergency situations, prioritizing requests and deploying resources appropriately.
  • Maintain a current and accurate listing of field unit locations to support effective response and situational awareness.
  • Monitor electronic alarms, emergency management systems, emergency elevator intercoms, and other warning systems, and promptly initiate appropriate actions when alerts occur.
  • Monitor video surveillance camera systems, initiate recording of activities when necessary, and help protect ownership interests through accurate observation and documentation.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public on topics such as hours of operation, rules and regulations, parking information, local ordinances, and other property-related questions.
  • Transfer phone calls and messages efficiently and courteously, ensuring that inquiries are routed to the appropriate individuals or departments.
  • Maintain typed logs and records of field unit activities for all properties, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
  • Prepare a variety of reports, including incident reports, statements, testimony documentation, and other written materials related to security and communications activities.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, data coding, and maintaining organized records for the security communications function.
  • Operate computer terminals and specialized systems, including Simplex Fire Systems, Cardkey Computer systems, license plate recognition programs, emergency intercoms, elevator intercoms, and control switches.
  • Work effectively under pressure while handling multiple tasks simultaneously, such as placing phone calls on hold to respond to radio calls from field officers, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Read, understand, and interpret rules, regulations, and safety procedures, and apply them appropriately in daily operations.
  • Assimilate information from multiple sources and quickly formulate appropriate plans of action, balancing safety, security, and public relations considerations.
  • Follow and abide by all issued and published rules and regulations governing the conduct of employees, and execute written and oral instructions in a timely manner based on events, situations, and circumstances.
  • Work independently, exercise appropriate authority, and take initiative to correct problems or identify solutions in the best interest of the organization.
  • Interact courteously and tactfully with the public and fellow employees, maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Respond calmly and quickly in emergency situations, demonstrating sound judgment and the ability to remain composed under stress.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical conduct, honesty, and integrity, and refrain from theft-related, dishonest, or unethical behavior.
  • Work and communicate with internal and external clients and customers in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner, demonstrating a strong commitment to quality service.
  • Align daily behavior and decision-making with the needs, priorities, and goals of the organization.
  • Reach above head level to operate fire panel equipment, switches, and to retrieve or replace three-ring binders containing emergency procedures.
  • Receive, secure, document, and release lost and found property after establishing proper title and ownership.
  • Lift files weighing approximately 20 pounds on an occasional basis as part of routine duties.
  • Move quickly around the dispatch center when responding to emergencies or rapidly evolving situations.
  • Sit for long periods while maintaining alertness, focus, and attention to assigned tasks and systems.
  • Communicate over two-way radio in a calm, clear voice so that others can easily understand the situation and instructions.
  • Speak with individuals who may be upset or distressed and help de-escalate emotionally charged situations through calm, professional communication.
  • Provide directions and general assistance to visitors, contributing to a positive experience and goodwill toward the properties.
  • Work varied shift assignments, including days, second shifts, and overnight shifts, as well as scheduled, unscheduled, or emergency shifts on weekends and holidays.
  • Participate in and complete required training programs and periodic testing to maintain proficiency in all security and communications tasks.
  • Perform related duties as required to support the overall security and communications mission of the organization.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in the English language, including the ability to speak clearly, read and interpret written materials, and write accurate reports and logs.
  • Ability to maintain composure and make appropriate decisions when reacting to a variety of situations involving the safety of persons and property.
  • Ability to determine priorities among simultaneous requests and messages and manage multiple tasks effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to transcribe radio and telephone messages quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of performance and accountability.
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public in a tactful, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Ability to accurately remember details and recall information as needed for reports and testimony.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and adapt existing ones to new situations or changing conditions.

  • Ability to type at a reasonable speed with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cordial working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and external partners.
  • Considerable knowledge of departmental rules and procedures as they relate to the communications and security role.
  • Considerable knowledge of codes and abbreviations used in radio communications, computer systems, and related electronic equipment.
  • Working knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations commonly involved in loss prevention and property management.
  • Ability to work varied shift assignments, including days, second shifts, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasional unscheduled or emergency shifts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Willingness and ability to successfully complete pre-assignment security training programs.
  • Completion of safety orientation, including MSDS program and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Completion of PSTN training materials, including designated disc and chapter content related to communications and safety topics, including bloodborne pathogen awareness.
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED, or willingness to obtain these certifications through employer-provided training.
  • Training in fire extinguisher use and fire response procedures.
  • Computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office, report writing, and the ability to merge digital photographs and print reports.
  • Completion of Verbal Judo or similar de-escalation and communication training.
  • Control room and dispatcher training, including familiarity with 911 procedures.
  • Optional training in flagging to support special events, for those who wish to work in that capacity.
  • Ability and willingness to be tested regularly on knowledge and skills to ensure ongoing proficiency in security and communications tasks.
