Summary Description:

To oversee the overall daily operations of assigned retail stores, including ensuring efficiency and profitability. Reports to Assistant Sales Director (ASD) and Vice President of Sales, Operations, & Marketing if ASD is out.

Exemplary Duties / Responsibilities:

  • The Store Manager is responsible for the assigned store's daily sales and operational success.
  • Must ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through excellent service leadership and employee training.
  • Accountable for meeting and/or exceeding sales goals by training, motivating, mentoring, and providing feedback to sales staff.
  • Responsible for submitting and maintaining all records necessary in daily operations.
  • Responsible for ordering merchandise and store supplies.
  • Responsible for maintaining the store in an orderly fashion, rotating products in a timely manner, and overseeing the production and pricing of merchandise.
  • Controls inventory to maximize revenue and return on product.
  • Maintains correct inventory of new goods as required.
  • Supervises and cross-trains all store personnel, including new employees, in all areas of the store.
  • Responsible for maintaining all safety, cleanliness, merchandising, and display standards.
  • Reports safety hazards and all accidents to Assistant Sales Director or Retail District Manager and Risk Management Specialist IMMEDIATELY.
  • Accountable for oversight of incoming and outgoing deliveries.
  • Answers to phone or electronic inquiries.
  • Responsible for ensuring a high level of service and donor appreciation.
  • Ensures all employees adhere to current Goodwill policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, and managing staff.
  • Flexibility to float, cover, and support other stores as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Attend retail and safety meetings as required.
  • Accountable for scheduling within payroll budgets and processing of approving payroll timecards.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Three to five years’ experience in retail sales with two to three years supervisory experience. Prior experience in thrift retail or consignment industry preferred.
  • Positive work history.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Mathematical skills.
  • Proficient user of MS Office (MS Excel in particular) and basic computer functions
  • Ability to read and write and understand basic math. Able to create and analyze reports, spreadsheets, and sales statistics.
  • Ability to understand complex and simple instructions.
  • Ability to handle customers effectively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to special needs.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and Holidays.
  • Ability to read and write.

  • Cooperation with the Manager, store personnel, direct supervisor, and Division Directors.

  • Use of cash register, calculator/10 key, and phones.

  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull at least 50 lbs.

Prioritizes merchandise quality, pricing accuracy, and floor layout to boost average transaction size. Aligns staffing with peak traffic periods for sales efficiency.
  • Retail Sales & Profitability Optimization - Leads with integrity, modeling Goodwill’s values of community, empowerment, and dignity through work. Communicates how daily work contributes to the mission, especially during team huddles and coaching. Represents Goodwill positively in the local community and donor relationships. Participates in mission-focused events or campaigns internally and externally.
  • Donor & Customer Engagement - Ensures timely rotation, tagging, and categorization of donated items per processing standards. Manages supply orders, store cleanliness, backroom organization, and stockroom safety. Regularly inspects store for visual merchandising compliance and loss prevention effectiveness. Oversees daily, weekly, and monthly checklists to ensure consistency.
  • Operational Excellence - Provides consistent coaching, clear expectations, and regular performance feedback. Cross-trains staff for flexibility and coverage across functions (e.g., cashiering, sorting, donor intake). Fosters a collaborative culture that respects diversity and celebrates accomplishments. Manages scheduling within budget and ensures all timecards are accurate and approved on time.
  • Staff Development & Supervision - Ensures prompt, warm greetings and service consistency across team. Monitors donation site experience (speed, signage, thank-you engagement). Trains staff on donor appreciation techniques and local impact stories. Responds quickly to complaints or negative reviews, using them as teachable moments.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making - Uses point-of-sale and Excel-based reports to evaluate category performance. Adjusts floor layout, pricing, or staff deployment based on foot traffic and sales data. Tracks donation flow vs. sales conversion to optimize output. Generates insights from shrinkage or inventory variance reports to tighten controls.
  • Adaptability & Resilience - Adapts plans quickly when donation volume surges or staffing changes unexpectedly. Maintains a calm, encouraging demeanor during high-pressure retail periods. Identifies backup strategies for coverage, product movement, and customer flow issues. Coaches staff to stay mission-focused during change, challenges, or peak seasons.
