Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, well-balanced meals for children and staff while maintaining the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen organization. This role plays a vital part in supporting children’s health and development through quality nutrition.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Planning & Preparation
- Plan and prepare nutritious, age-appropriate meals for children
- Collaborate with leadership on weekly/monthly menus
- Accommodate dietary restrictions, allergies, and special needs
- Promote healthy eating habits through balanced meal options
Food Safety & Kitchen Operations
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and handling regulations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment
- Routinely inspect and clean kitchen equipment and appliances
Inventory Management
- Monitor food supplies and kitchen inventory
- Order and store food items appropriately
- Maintain accurate records of inventory and usage
Additional Responsibilities
- Support center events as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Knowledge of nutrition, food safety, and allergen management
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to prepare meals for children of various age groups
- Excellent communication and attention to detail
- Ability to work calmly in fast-paced or high-pressure situations
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office preferred)
- Ability to pass a background check
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Culinary training or certification preferred
- 1–2 years of cooking or food service experience (childcare setting preferred)
- Food Handler’s or ServSafe Certification required
Certifications (Preferred/Required)
- First Aid & CPR Certification
- Child Abuse Recognition & Intervention Training
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (food supplies, equipment)
- Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods
- Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, active kitchen environment
