Job Title: MobileTrailer Mechanic Department: Service
Classification: Full time, non-exempt
Job Summary:
Mid-States Utility Trailer Sales, Inc., a leading provider of trailer sales, service, and support, is seeking a skilled and customer-focused Mobile Trailer Mechanic to join our Altoona, IA team. This role is ideal for a safety-focused, detail-oriented professional capable of performing high-quality mobile service on a variety of trailer types, including dry vans, flatbeds, and refrigerated units. The successful candidate will not only be an expert in their field but also a professional representative for our company who will be compensated based on an hourly rate of pay plus bonus eligibility.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform mobile inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on dry vans, flatbeds, reefers, and other trailer types
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems, brakes, suspensions, axles, wheels, and frames
- Complete welding, fabrication, and light bodywork as required
- Document all repair activities and maintain accurate service records and parts inventory
- Ensure all work complies with DOT and company safety standards
- Communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, drivers, and customers regarding equipment needs and service updates
- Maintain a clean, organized mobile work environment
- Ability to maintain an on-call schedule during business hours
- Employee must be at work during scheduled hours and demonstrate reliable and predictable attendance
- Other duties and tasks as required by supervisor
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proven experience as a trailer, diesel, or heavy-equipment mechanic
- Strong knowledge of trailer electrical, brake, suspension, and structural systems
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in email and the ability to quickly learn and navigate diagnostic and fleet management software
- Transportation refrigeration (reefer) system knowledge and diagnostic experience; 608 certification preferred or willingness to obtain
- Welding and fabrication proficiency
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and work orders
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required
- Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and operate in a mobile service environment
- Ability to pass post-offer physical & drug screen
Education and Experience:
- Mobile Technician or related experience required
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, push or carry up to 100-pound objects with assistance
- Frequently required to sit / stand / kneel / stoop / bend / use hands to handle materials / reach with arms and hands / operate motor-vehicle or job-related equipment / climb ladders
