Project Engineer

Role Summary

The Project Engineer supports the project team throughout all phases of construction by coordinating documentation, supporting field operations, assisting with estimating and change management, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and administrative standards. This role provides hands-on exposure to all aspects of project delivery while developing technical, organizational, and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities

Safety & Quality

  • Actively participate in and support all company safety and quality programs, demonstrating a commitment to an injury-free jobsite.
  • Utilize company best practices and construction standards in daily activities.
  • Obtain and maintain OSHA 30 designation.

Field & Construction Support

  • Support the project team to monitor crew sizes, self-perform hours, materials, quantities, and equipment.
  • Perform periodic jobsite observations in coordination with project leadership.
  • Participate in punch lists, inspections, and close-out activities.
  • Participate in regular site visits with team.

Project Controls & Reporting

  • Support in the preparation and maintain project reports, including daily logs, weekly progress reports, manpower tracking, production schedules, and equipment tracking.
  • Provide progress updates to support project scheduling and planning.

Document Control & Administration

  • Post and maintain current drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Track shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, PCIs, PCOs, and change orders; follow up on approvals and deliveries.
  • Organize, process, and maintain project documentation in accordance with established file structures and systems.

Estimating, Bidding & Contracts Support

  • Assist with preconstruction and bidding activities, including distributing plans, issuing invitations to bid, and contacting subcontractors.
  • Support preparation of estimates, quantity take-offs, and bids.
  • Assist with subcontract and purchase order preparation, execution, documentation and project buy out.
  • Support the award process, including bond documentation and system setup.

Meetings & Communication

  • Organize and participate in project meetings; prepare and distribute meeting minutes and routine correspondence.
  • Provide timely, professional communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build strong working relationships with project team members, tradespeople, subcontractors, and vendors.

Compliance & Payment Support

  • Track and coordinate compliance documentation such as insurance certificates, bonds, certified payroll, lien waivers, and diversity reporting.
  • Support project management in ensuring compliance requirements are met prior to subcontractor payments.

Close-Out Support

  • Assist with project close-out documentation, including punch lists, as-built drawings, O&M manuals, warranties, and final records.

Professional Development

  • Develop an understanding of company roles, project delivery processes, and full project lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Collaborate effectively within the project team and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Utilize J. Benson Construction technology platforms to support assigned responsibilities.
  • Attend Industry events and develop professional network.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
