Note: This position can be based in our Little Canada, Wayzata, or Burnsville offices, depending on your preference.
The Medicaid Associate Attorney advises clients on long-term care Medicaid eligibility and develops strategies to protect assets in compliance with federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include overseeing and preparing Medicaid applications, creating and executing asset protection plans (such as Medicaid-compliant annuities), and guiding clients through each step of the process. The attorney collaborates closely with clients and internal team members to provide high-quality legal services and a smooth client experience.
This role offers strong training and mentorship from the Lead Attorney, along with support from experienced Legal Assistants who assist with documentation and case management. It’s an excellent opportunity for an attorney seeking to build expertise in Medicaid planning and asset protection while gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative, supportive environment.
Responsibilities:
Client Consultation & Strategy
- Meet with clients to evaluate their long-term care planning needs.
- Provide guidance on Medicaid eligibility, available benefits, and long-term care planning options.
- Design and implement asset protection strategies aligned with each client’s goals.
Application and Document Drafting and Review
- Overseeing preparations of Medicaid applications and supporting documentation to county intake offices, including responding to county verification requests, with assistance from Legal Assistants throughout the process.
- Collaborate with internal team members to ensure efficient case management, including support from experienced support staff and the lead Medicaid attorney.
- Analyze financial records to determine eligibility and proactive planning opportunities, with support from Legal Assistants in gathering, organizing, and summarizing documentation, and under the guidance of the Lead Attorney as needed.
Ensure compliance with federal and state Medicaid laws and regulations.
- Stay current with changes in laws, tax regulations, and DHS policies.
- Research complex legal questions.
- Communicate with government agencies regarding application status and issues.
- Maintain accurate and timely client records.
- Provide excellent client service and maintain strong client relationships.
Qualifications:
Education Experience:
- A four-year university degree and Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school are required.
- Active license to practice law in Minnesota.
- 2+ years of experience in Medicaid planning, elder law, or asset protection (preferred).
- Experience in client-facing legal work.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong legal drafting and analytical skills.
- Excellent understanding of Medicaid eligibility rules and long-term care planning.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized, must be thorough while completing tasks.
- High-level of integrity.
- Investigative and curious nature.
- Strong problem-solving and conceptual thinking abilities.
- Ability to be autonomous and independently handle complex matters and relationships.
- Comfort discussing sensitive family and financial topics.
- Adaptability and openness to variety in the workplace.
