Job Description

ROLE SUMMARY

Howard University Hospital is seeking a skilled Painter to join our Facilities Management team. In this role you will perform all types of painting work throughout the Health Center — from surface preparation and color matching to finish work, decorative effects and signage — along with other related tasks that fall under the painting trade. Your craftsmanship keeps our patient care areas, clinical spaces and public corridors clean, safe and welcoming for the patients, families and staff who walk through them every day.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Paint surfaces throughout the Health Center using brushes, spray guns and paint rollers, including simulated wood grain, marble and tile effects.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting — smooth surfaces with sandpaper, wire brushes or steel wool, and remove old paint using paint remover, scrapers and blow torch.
  • Select premixed paints and stains, or prepare paints and stains to match specified colors.
  • Repair damaged surfaces as assigned, and fill nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster or other fillers.
  • Create special effects through applied paint techniques.
  • Cut stencils and stencil surfaces with lettering or decorations, and paint signs on surfaces, as assigned.
  • Operate and properly handle all tools and equipment of the trade, including paint rollers, brushes, sprayers and pigments.
  • Support the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct; complete annual HIPAA and Compliance Program training; and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities related and appropriate to the position and area.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Journeyman painter's qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of journeyman painter qualifications sufficient to perform all work of the painting trade.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Hospital reserves the right to alter working hours based on operational needs.
  • Physical requirements: frequent walking and standing; occasional sitting, bending, squatting and climbing; and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 35 lbs., and of more than 35 lbs. with the use of equipment.
