Job Description: Cattle Manager
Location: Andrews, SC
Position Type: Full Time
Hours: Monday through Friday with seasonal irregular hours on weekends
Description of Work:
This is a professional position managing a cattle herd across a 4900-acre plantation. The team uses grazing and prescribed burning as tools in a modified patch burn grazing system to maintain early to mid-successional vegetation. Management prioritizes bobwhite quail and other wildlife. The herd currently consists of 240 animal units (cow-calf pairs, yearling heifers, steers, and bulls). The herd is overwintered on property and calving occurs in the spring.
Cattle manager will report to the plantation manager. The plantation employs a full-time workforce of five employees.
Primary Duties
· Day to day cattle herd oversight
· Fence maintenance and upkeep both high tensile and Geofencing
· Annual Vaccinations, Worming, Preg Checks, Weaning, Castration
· Maintain accurate records via Cattle Inventory and Herd Manager programs
· Operation of heavy equipment
· Establishment and maintenance of solar wells, water sources, firebreaks, and various agricultural practices
· Herbaceous/ hardwood control
At times, the cattle manager will participate in additional duties, including:
· Prescribed burning
· Fall woods preparation
· Additional projects that may arise
Cattle Manager will need working knowledge of
· General Livestock
· Heavy equipment operations
· Grazing practices for wildlife management
· Pesticides application
· Computer Skills (Excel, Google Earth, onX) and Data Collection
· Prescribed burning and predator management are helpful
Must have a valid driver’s license and completion of I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Ability to operate farm trucks, ATV’s, boats, and firearms is a requirement.
Individuals must have the ability to work without direct supervision and have the necessary skills to organize workloads and communicate with others. Must have the ability to collect data and keep accurate records and the physical stamina to work outdoors for extended periods of time.
Salary and Benefits
This is a salaried position. Compensation will be informed by experience level but will be in the range of $45,000-$60,000. A house located on the property is available for this position with utilities covered.
Company participates in a bi-weekly payroll, and each employee must provide direct deposit information.
Employees initially receive five vacation days per year and company honors six federal vacation days annually (New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).
Simple IRA retirement with matching 3%.
