Job DescriptionDirect Counsel is seeking a Patent Senior Associate Attorney or Counsel to join a growing Intellectual Property practice in Providence, RI, and Hartford, CT.

About the Role
This position is ideal for a patent attorney with 7+ years of experience in mechanical, electrical, or computer-related patent prosecution. The attorney will work closely with the firm’s Patent Prosecution & Counseling team, handling a broad range of intellectual property matters, including patent filings, portfolio management, and post-grant proceedings.
Key Responsibilities

Evaluate patentability of innovations across mechanical, electrical, and related technology fields.

Prepare and prosecute U.S. patent applications and coordinate with foreign counsel on international filings.

Represent clients in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Manage IP due diligence projects and strategic portfolio management.

Conduct legal and technical research for freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement analyses.

Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and business teams to develop and execute IP strategies.

Serve as liaison for interdepartmental initiatives and interact with outside counsel.
Qualifications

Minimum 7 years of patent prosecution experience, preferably in a law firm setting.

Admission to a state bar in good standing.

Registration to practice before the USPTO.

Strong technical background in mechanical, electrical, or related disciplines.

Post-grant proceeding experience preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
