Job DescriptionDirect Counsel is seeking a Patent Senior Associate Attorney or Counsel to join a growing Intellectual Property practice in Providence, RI, and Hartford, CT.

Location: Providence, RI; Hartford, CT

About the Role
This position is ideal for a patent attorney with 7+ years of experience in mechanical, electrical, or computer-related patent prosecution. The attorney will work closely with the firm’s Patent Prosecution & Counseling team, handling a broad range of intellectual property matters, including patent filings, portfolio management, and post-grant proceedings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patentability of innovations across mechanical, electrical, and related technology fields.

  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. patent applications and coordinate with foreign counsel on international filings.

  • Represent clients in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Manage IP due diligence projects and strategic portfolio management.

  • Conduct legal and technical research for freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement analyses.

  • Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and business teams to develop and execute IP strategies.

  • Serve as liaison for interdepartmental initiatives and interact with outside counsel.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of patent prosecution experience, preferably in a law firm setting.

  • Admission to a state bar in good standing.

  • Registration to practice before the USPTO.

  • Strong technical background in mechanical, electrical, or related disciplines.

  • Post-grant proceeding experience preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
