Unique opportunity for a senior civil engineer who wants to grow their own legacy by starting, building, and growing a highway and transportation practice group of their very own.

THE ROLE

The Transportation Practice Leader will lead the launch, buildout, and growth of a new transportation engineering practice out of our Billings, MT office with the autonomy to shape its direction, build the team, and establish a strong market presence. You'll be supported by an established firm infrastructure, existing client relationships, and leadership alignment to accelerate growth. This role combines deep technical expertise with entrepreneurial leadership, requiring ownership of service development, client growth, and team formation. For the right person, this is a chance to build something—not just deliver projects.

These responsibilities include:

  • Define and lead the growth strategy for the transportation practice, including service offerings, target markets, and team buildout.
  • Establish technical standards, QA/QC protocols, and best practices for the discipline.
  • Partner with firm leadership to shape workload, revenue growth, and resource planning as the practice scales.
  • Lead business development efforts for the discipline, including client pursuit strategy, proposal development, and relationship expansion.
  • Serve as a visible market leader and technical representative for the discipline in the region.
  • Serve as the technical authority for the discipline locally, ensuring engineering excellence, regulatory compliance, and rigorous QA/QC standards across all projects.
  • Lead and manage the complete project lifecycle, driving schedule performance, cost control, and high‑quality outcomes.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development to direct reports, fostering a culture of growth and excellence.
  • Establish a visible and credible transportation presence in the local market.
  • Deliver high-quality projects that reinforce technical excellence and trust.

YOUR STRENGTHS

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, or ability to obtain licensure within a defined timeframe
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or construction engineering or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution
  • Progressive experience in highway and transportation engineering with demonstrated growth in technical and leadership responsibility
  • Demonstrated experience helping grow or scale a technical practice, service line, or market presence within a consulting engineering environment (preferred)
  • Experience serving as a technical mentor, reviewer, or discipline resource for other engineers
  • Advanced project management experience leading complex projects and teams
  • Strong financial, project profitability, and operational planning acumen
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering transportation DOT regulations
  • Understanding of design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil3D, Blue Beam)
  • Established local industry connections that can help accelerate business development and market growth preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and grow client relationships and generate new business opportunities
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record is required for periodic travel
