POSITION SUMMARY
The Lateral Detective is a sworn law enforcement officer with prior investigative experience, responsible for conducting complex and sensitive criminal investigations. This position requires specialized knowledge in investigative techniques and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have experience in areas such as homicide, robbery, sexual assault, domestic violence, narcotics, fraud, or gang-related crimes.
The City Police Department will compensate Lateral Transfer candidates based on their law enforcement experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Conducts follow-up investigations of reported crimes, including interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects.
- Collects, processes, and preserves physical evidence in accordance with legal standards.
- Prepares detailed investigative reports, affidavits, and search warrants.
- Collaborates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Testifies in court as an expert witness or in support of investigations.
- Uses surveillance, undercover operations, and technology-based tools to support investigations.
- Attends and participates in briefings, case reviews, and specialized training.
- Communicates with supervisors, notification of screenings & pertinent case details.
- Maintains confidentiality and integrity of all sensitive case materials.
- Serves in an on-call capacity as needed.
Performs other law enforcement related activities:
- Prepares a variety of reports and records including officer's Daily Log, reports of investigations, etc.
- Participates in drills and other department training activities including the use of firearms.
- Provides community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as crime prevention, drug abuse resistance education (DARE), traffic safety, etc.
- Provides community information through speeches to citizen groups and answers citizen inqueries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Currently employed as a sworn law enforcement officer or recently separated in good standing.
- Minimum of two to five years of investigative experience as a detective/investigator.
- Possess a valid POST certification (or equivalent from another state with ability to transfer).
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with major crimes (e.g., homicide, sex crimes, organized crime).
- Bilingual skills.
- Associate or bachelor's degree.
- Proficiency in digital forensics or crime scene investigation.
- Completion of specialized investigative training (e.g., FBI National Academy, homicide schools).
