Job Description

Overview

Whistler Partners is partnering with a highly sophisticated financial and technology-driven platform looking to add an IP and technology transactions attorney to its legal and compliance team. This person will join a small, highly skilled legal group responsible for a broad range of commercial contracts, with a focus on data, software, technology, services, purchasing, consulting, and related IP matters. The role is a strong fit for someone who wants high-end commercial and technology transactions work inside a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment where legal judgment, drafting precision, and business fluency matter.

Why this role?

This is a rare opportunity for an IP and technology transactions attorney who wants to support sophisticated financial and technology-oriented businesses from inside the legal function.

The work sits at the intersection of commercial contracts, IP counseling, software licensing, data licensing, market data, technology procurement, and emerging issues around open source and generative AI. The team is small, so the right candidate will have meaningful ownership, direct internal client exposure, and the ability to work independently while still being part of a highly capable legal group.

The platform is open to a broad seniority range, from attorneys with at least four years of relevant experience to much more senior candidates who want a sophisticated in-house seat.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate data and software license agreements.
  • Handle technology, purchase, service, consulting, and other commercial agreements.
  • Advise financial and technology-oriented internal clients on intellectual property matters and related legal issues.
  • Provide guidance on contract interpretation and commercial risk.
  • Manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a small legal and compliance team.

Top Requirements

  • Law degree and strong academic credentials.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience at a law firm, in-house legal department, or both.
  • More senior candidates, including attorneys with 15+ years of experience, may also be considered.
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating licensing, technology, and commercial contracts.
  • Experience advising clients on intellectual property issues and contract interpretation.
  • Excellent analytical ability, sound judgment, attention to detail, and drafting skills.
  • Strong communication, organization, and work ethic.
  • Familiarity with commercial software and financial or market data licenses preferred.
  • Experience with open source software or generative AI issues is a plus, but not required.

Compensation

  • $250,000–$325,000 base compensation.
  • Year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire.

TL;DR

Elite financial technology platform hiring an IP and technology transactions attorney to join a small legal and compliance team. Strong fit for someone with licensing, software, data, commercial contracts, and IP counseling experience. Open to attorneys with 4+ years of experience, including much more senior candidates. High-end in-house seat with strong compensation, guaranteed first-year bonus, and sophisticated internal clients.

About Whistler Partners

Matchmakers, Not Headhunters

Whistler Partners is a boutique matchmaking firm focused on counseling the best and the brightest attorneys over the course of their careers. We believe that the right move comes from working closely with talent to curate their long-term career paths. When it comes to career advice, what matters is not the size of the agency but the strength of your individual recruiter.

We readily admit that we are elite and only work with the best – after all, a little elitism is okay when it comes to your career. Employers love us because we are picky about whom we represent, and attorneys love us because we get them their dream jobs.
