Motor City Metal Fab is a fast-growing, family-owned precision fabrication shop in Southeast Michigan. We specialize in CNC machining, laser and waterjet cutting, welding, and powder coating — all under one roof.

We’re looking for a Prototype Welder / Fabricator to help bring new designs to life. You’ll work on one-off parts, short runs, and custom assemblies where precision, problem-solving, and craftsmanship matter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and weld prototype and low-volume production parts from prints, sketches, and CAD drawings

  • Perform MIG and TIG welding on steel, stainless steel, and aluminum

  • Cut, fit, tack, weld, and finish components to tight tolerances

  • Work closely with engineering and machining teams to refine designs and improve manufacturability

  • Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and GD&T

  • Maintain high quality standards and perform self-inspection

  • Assist with fixture setup and prototype development as needed

  • Keep a clean, organized, and safe work area

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong MIG and TIG welding minimum 3 years experience

  • Proven background in prototype or custom fabrication (job shop experience preferred)

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols

  • Experience working with steel, stainless, and aluminum

  • High attention to detail and pride in workmanship

  • Ability to work independently and solve fabrication challenges

  • Reliable, punctual, and professional

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Experience with fixture building or prototype tooling

  • Race car fabrication

  • Familiarity working alongside CNC machining operations

  • Experience in automotive, motorsports, or industrial fabrication

  • Ability to contribute ideas to improve designs or fabrication processes
