Job Description

A DC Government Agency is seeking qualified Permit Technicians to support the review, processing, and coordination of construction and occupancy permit applications associated with the District’s lead-free initiative.

This role is critical to ensuring timely permit processing, technical review accuracy, and compliance with engineering and public space standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assist with processing construction and occupancy permit applications submitted through the Transportation Online Permitting System (TOPS).
  • Coordinate permit routing and ensure applications are assigned to reviewers within required timeframes.
  • Review engineering drawings, civil plans, and technical specifications for compliance with District standards.
  • Analyze construction details, identify non-conforming features, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide technical guidance related to permit application issues and resolution support.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate comments within TOPS throughout the permit lifecycle.
  • Compile technical data and prepare reports related to permit review activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in:
    • Engineering
    • Architecture
    • Urban Planning

OR

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in:

    • Construction; or
    • Reviewing engineered drawings, technical plans, and specifications

OR

Required Certifications:

    • NICET Certifications in Engineering Technician, Asphalt, and Concrete
    • Traffic Control Technician (TCT) or Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience using online permitting systems
  • Knowledge of public right-of-way construction standards
  • Strong technical review and documentation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple permit reviews simultaneously
