Job Description

Join a dynamic California law firm with a strong focus on municipal and public agency work. This Citrus Heights office is seeking a Municipal Law/Land Use Attorney to provide immediate counsel to planning commissions, city councils, and other public boards. This is a unique chance to work in a collegial environment with a path toward a City Attorney role.

This full-time, non-litigation position blends transactional and advisory work with public agencies. You'll handle land use, zoning, CEQA/NEPA compliance, and other municipal matters while attending public meetings and collaborating with local officials.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as legal counsel to planning commissions, city councils, and other public boards
  • Advise clients on the Brown Act, Public Records Act, and Political Reform Act
  • Draft ordinances, development agreements, and review zoning laws and variances
  • Guide municipalities on CEQA/NEPA compliance, land use entitlements, election law, fair housing, and water law
  • Attend meetings and provide real-time legal guidance
  • Collaborate with municipal leaders, stakeholders, and fellow attorneys

What We're Looking For

  • Active California Bar license
  • 3+ years of municipal law/advisory experience
  • Experience serving as legal counsel to public boards or commissions
  • Strong expertise in land use, zoning, and CEQA/NEPA compliance
  • Ability to step in immediately and provide confident, actionable advice
  • Local to or willing to relocate/commute to Citrus Heights

Compensation & Benefits

  • Junior Role: $140,000–$165,000 | Senior Role: $165,000–$180,000
  • Discretionary bonuses based on writing, land use, or election law experience
  • Flexible work environment: hybrid mix of office, municipal site visits, and remote work
  • Low billable hour expectations, business casual dress, and supportive team culture
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage (generous employer contributions)
  • SIMPLE IRA with 3% match and immediate vesting
  • PTO and paid holidays

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Immediate opportunity to advise and influence local government decisions
  • Mid-sized, collegial firm known for long-term attorney retention and strong culture
  • Potential career growth into a City Attorney position
  • Work in the Sacramento-area community with a balance of professional challenge and quality of life
