We’re seeking a Network and Security Administrator to bring additional technical expertise to our growing IT team. In this role, you’ll help enhance and mature our network infrastructure and security posture, actively contributing to the design and implementation of new systems and tools. You’ll collaborate closely with our external security partners, play a key role in shaping the organization’s security strategy, and lead critical initiatives that protect both our organization and the communities we serve.

Pay: $80,000-95,000 annually based on experience

Job Summary:

The Network and Security Administrator is responsible for managing and securing the organization’s network infrastructure and systems. This role ensures network availability, performance, and security by proactively monitoring, maintaining, and improving core network services and cybersecurity controls. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical professional with strong troubleshooting skills and a security-first mindset, capable of supporting a growing organization with a lean IT team.

Schedule: Full-time; 40 hour/week role

Location: Hybrid - 1 day every other week on site required. Access to reliable internet, ability to prioritize work independently, and foster relationships while working in a hybrid (remote and in-person) environment is required. Must live in or have easy access to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and be available for on-site interactions at all AHS locations.

Essential Functions:

Network Administration

  • Design, configure, and maintain network hardware, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, and VPNs.
  • Monitor network performance and ensure availability for users across multiple sites.
  • Implement and manage network segmentation to support security and scalability.
  • Maintain documentation of network topology, configurations, and procedures.

Security Administration

  • Manage and maintain security tools including firewalls, endpoint protection, MDR\EDR partner and Phishing tests.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and remediate findings.
  • Implement and enforce security policies, including access control, password standards, and MFA.
  • Monitor for threats, incidents, and unusual activity; lead initial incident response and escalate as necessary.

Support Capacity:

  • Provide Tier 2/3 escalation support for network and security-related issues.
  • Partner with help desk and systems administrator to resolve incidents quickly.
  • Maintain regular system backups and disaster recovery readiness for critical infrastructure.
  • Recommend and implement network and security improvements to align with organizational growth.
  • Participate in IT roadmap planning and support strategic projects, such as system upgrades or adding in new capabilities
  • Educate staff on security awareness and best practices.

Communication and Culture:

  • Provide a customer-oriented approach, communicating at all stages of ticket.
  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees, and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all.

Additional Information:

Schedule and Attendance:

  • Regular, predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability to work during operational hours.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings, all staff meetings, and one-on-one meetings with direct leader.
  • Must be able to travel to a different work site based on department needs
  • May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office/desk based.
  • Adjacent animal shelter areas may be humid, noisy, or odorous.

Requirements

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in network administration and cybersecurity within a medium-sized or multi-site organization required; 4+ years of experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with firewalls (e.g., Fortinet, Cisco, Palo Alto), VPN technologies, and network monitoring tools.
  • Experience with security frameworks and compliance standards such as PCI DSS
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and VPNs.
  • Experience with endpoint protection, IDS/IPS, SIEM, and MFA solutions.
  • Familiarity with Security frameworks (NIST, CIS, ISO…)

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged sitting at a desk.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and handle items up to 50 lbs. unassisted. For items over 50 lbs., assistance from another team member is required.

Emotional Demands:

  • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia.
