The City of Douglasville is now accepting applications for our Spring Internship Program!

This learning experience affords the students a view of the inner workings of city government. Each intern will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of study. Each intern must be open to new ideas and suggestions, and be committed to completing the internship in its entirety. Interns also have the opportunity to participate in some special activities depending on the department assigned.

Internship Opportunity:

Selected students will participate in a meaningful and challenging 20-week spring internship that will allow each intern to have exposure to different facets of local government, and receive critical skills, and career and personal development training. Interns will work on a wide variety of tasks and projects within a cross-functional team of professionals and get exposure to leaders within the organization. Typically, 40 hours per week; The rate of pay will be paid at $20 per hour.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The intern will learn to manage projects from start to finish, which includes monitoring budgets, updating schedules, and tracking work progress during both the design and construction phases.
  • Assist in analyzing completed work to ensure it is in compliance with contract specifications and coordinate final inspections with contractors and engineers.
  • Answer inquiries and clarify codes related to site development in person, over the phone, or by email.
  • Assist with the bidding and contracting process for various projects. This involves gaining an understanding of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and bid packages and attending important pre-bid meetings alongside engineering staff.
  • Attend regular progress meetings to stay updated on project status and will likely facilitate coordination between stakeholders.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learning the engineering processes regarding development within the city
  • Understanding supporting documents for projects (Bidding documents, invoices, contracts, departmental checklists, etc.)
  • Understanding the meeting processes for construction projects
  • Develop knowledge regarding jargon used in engineering, transportation, and local government
  • Gain hands-on experience in reviewing and analyzing construction documents for compliance with city codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (i.e., development plans, land disturbance permits, retaining walls)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States
  • Current enrollment in a college, university, or technical school (Junior, Senior, or Grad Student)
  • Current grade point average of 3.0 or better

Preferred Skills:

Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
