Job DescriptionScientist I, Oligonucleotide Analytics

Location: La Jolla, California (Onsite – 100% required, no remote option)

About the Role

We are seeking a Scientist I with expertise in oligonucleotide analytics to join our team in La Jolla, CA. This role is 100% onsite and will focus on the characterization, optimization, and QC of siRNA and other therapeutic oligonucleotides using advanced analytical chemistry techniques.

The ideal candidate has a PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related field, 1–3 years of relevant industry experience, and hands-on expertise with LC-MS (Thermo LTQ, Thermo Orbitrap), chromatography, and oligonucleotide characterization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain LC-MS systems (Thermo LTQ, Thermo Orbitrap) for in-process and final QC of oligonucleotides (siRNA, ASO).

  • Optimize and improve analytical methods for novel oligonucleotide synthesis projects.

  • Apply HPLC (denaturing, non-denaturing, RP-IP, SEC, ion-exchange) and LC-MS for nucleic acid and lipid analysis (GalNAc, cholesterol, C16 phosphoramidites, LNPs).

  • Establish and automate high-throughput analytical workflows to support discovery and preclinical programs.

  • Conduct QC testing of oligonucleotides and assist in method development for assay requests from biology teams.

  • Present technical data and project updates at team and departmental meetings.

  • Ensure lab supplies are stocked and maintain high productivity in a fast-paced lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline with 1–3 years of relevant lab/research experience.

  • Proven expertise in oligonucleotide and/or nucleoside/nucleotide characterization.

  • Hands-on experience with chromatography techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, SEC, ion-exchange).

  • Direct experience analyzing siRNA, ASO, and oligonucleotide modifications.

  • Familiarity with lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations of mRNA.

  • Strong data analysis, troubleshooting, and method optimization skills.
