Role: Legal Aid Attorney [Family Law or Criminal Law experience is required]
A mission-driven nonprofit legal organization is seeking a DC Licensed Attorney interested in public sector work. This person will oversee the legal services program while maintaining a caseload focused on defending families involved with child protective services and related matters. This role involves direct representation, program development, mentorship of legal staff and volunteers, and collaboration on advocacy initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring strong litigation or administrative advocacy experience, a deep commitment to racial and economic justice, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced nonprofit environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal services to families, primarily parents involved in investigations by child protection authorities
- Draft discovery, pleadings, and conduct legal research
- Support and manage support staff - paralegal
- Grant application work
- Represent organization at community events
- Court attendance, mediations, hearings, motions practice, etc.
- Make a difference in the lives of families in the DMV area
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor and Active DC Bar License
- Experience with trial litigation in either family law or criminal law
- An interest in a legal aid or public sector legal career
