Job Description
Position Summary
The Supply Chain Development Engineer supports Purchasing and Supplier Quality initiatives by evaluating and developing supplier capabilities across the supply base. This role is responsible for supplier onboarding, performance improvement, and driving enhancements in cost, quality, and delivery. The position plays a key role in identifying and developing lower-cost domestic and international sourcing opportunities while serving as a technical liaison between internal teams and external manufacturing partners.
Key Responsibilities
Supplier Development & Performance
- Lead supplier development and engagement initiatives to improve cost, quality, delivery, and overall performance.
- Evaluate current and prospective supplier manufacturing capabilities, capacity, and quality systems.
- Support onboarding of new suppliers and maintain the Approved Supplier List (ASL).
- Develop, implement, and monitor supplier improvement plans focused on cost reduction, quality, and delivery performance.
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with manufacturing partners.
- Coach suppliers on best practices related to documentation, finishing processes, and quality assurance.
- Identify and pursue cost-reduction opportunities, including lower-cost international sourcing options when appropriate.
- Serve as a technical liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and external suppliers.
- Analyze bills of material (BOMs) and technical drawings to identify key requirements and cost-saving opportunities.
- Share expertise in acceptable manufacturing methods for parts, assemblies, tooling, and equipment.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Purchasing, Engineering, and Project Management teams to align supplier capabilities with project requirements.
- Support supplier contract and quotation negotiations.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related technical field.
Experience
- 3–5 years of experience in manufacturing or a technology-driven supply chain environment.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and suppliers.
- Proven ability to identify and implement cost-reduction initiatives.
