Paralegal Specialist III (Municipal Law) (Office of the County Attorney)
Job Description
The Rockland County Office of the County Attorney is seeking candidates for a full-time, Paralegal Specialist III (Municipal Law) position in its Litigation Team. This is the highest-level title in the paralegal series involving the responsibility for performing advanced, independent legal support work and for coordinating, overseeing and supervising the work of lower-level paralegal staff.
Job Description
Paralegal duties include a wide variety of legal duties including supervising and assigning work to other paralegal staff, calendar, docket and workflow management, drafting correspondence, affidavits, subpoenas, pleadings, motions and memoranda in a variety of fields including Constitutional law, employment law, torts, and land use and filing or e-filing those documents in New York State and Federal courts. The work also involves conducting complex legal research and ensuring that all filings and service of process are completed accurately and within statutory deadlines. Additionally, this employee will assist in the development and implementation of office policies, conduct meetings, develop and deliver orientation programs and ensure departmental compliance with legal and administrative requirements. An employee in this class may, from time to time, be required to work other than normal working hours when litigation deadlines require. The work is performed under the general supervision of one or more attorney(s), and supervision is exercised over lower-level paralegal staff. Thorough knowledge of legal documents, forms and procedures, good knowledge of office management and the ability to independently perform complex legal research and drafting and to supervise the work of others are required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of a Paralegal Studies certificate program and four (4) years of experience performing paralegal duties*, one (1) year of which must have included the supervision of staff; or
- An Associate’s degree or higher and five (5) years of experience performing paralegal duties*, one (1) year of which must have included the supervision of staff; or
- An Associate’s degree or higher in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Legal Assistant Studies, or comparable degree and four (4) years of experience performing paralegal duties*, one (1) year of which must have included the supervision of staff ; or
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher and three (3) years of experience performing paralegal duties*, one (1) year of which must have included the supervision of staff; or
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Legal Assistant Studies, or comparable degree and two (2) years of experience performing paralegal duties*, one (1) year of which must have included the supervision of staff; or
- A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an American Bar Association accredited school and one (1) year of experience which included the supervision of staff may be deemed fully qualifying.
Other Requirements and Information:
Rockland County residency is not required.
Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position as part of the NY HELPS Local program.
