Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic individual to oversee and support the daily functions of our roll service operations. Reporting to the Site Manager, this position is responsible for engineering support and technical customer service. This position will work closely with the production team to facilitate the flow of work through the plant to insure technically sound repairs are recommended and implemented. The ideal candidate will have deep technical knowledge, hands-on leadership experience, and a customer-focused mindset. This is a salary, exempt position.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering & Technical Leadership
- Lead engineering services including customers request for quotes, mechanical design, condition assessment, and repair methodology.
- Ensure technical accuracy and cost-effective repairs for customer rolls; review inspection reports and prepare repair alternatives.
- Oversee maintenance of engineering drawings, records, and design documentation.
- Serve as the technical point of contact for mechanical services issues across departments and with customers.
Operations & Project Management
- Coordinate with the production team to schedule shop work efficiently and urgently.
- Assist with Optimizing workflows and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor KPIs, maintain documentation of repair assessments and engineering drawings.
Customer Service & Collaboration
- Work closely with Product Manager and Sales to address technical concerns, recommend repair strategies, and support customer visits.
- Occasionally visit customer sites and collaborate with TSEs to provide technical solutions and promote mechanical services.
- Maintain consistent communication regarding condition assessments and repair plans.
Safety, Compliance & Training
- Participate in safety initiatives and manage assigned segments of the safety program.
- Ensure adherence to company standards (SPI) and relevant industry regulations.
- Provide technical training for shop personnel, particularly in inspection reports, NDT, and balancing.
- Conduct rolling audits on metalwork procedures and support cross-plant efficiency and standardization.
Qualifications:
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in a paper mill or mechanical shop setting.
- Strong background in roll design, bearing systems, repair techniques, balancing, and NDT.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with ERP/MRP systems.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to travel to customer and other company sites.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in roll manufacturing, especially in paper or metalworking environments.
- Ability to read and create detailed engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of ISO, TQM, QIT, and other formal quality systems.
- Leadership experience with technical and operational teams.
- Demonstrated success in customer relationship management and troubleshooting.
