Job Title: Fiber Test Engineer (Contractor) – Data Center Project
Location: Abilene, TX
Contract Duration: 6 years (Contractor), 5 days onsite, 12 hour shifts (day & night available)
Project: Datacenter Project (Telecom Infrastructure & Cloud Services)
Position Overview:
Vivid is seeking a highly skilled Fiber Test Engineer to join our team as a contractor for the one of a kind datacenter Project. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing testing, validation, and troubleshooting of fiber-optic networks and associated systems, ensuring the highest level of performance and reliability for critical telecom and cloud infrastructure. As part of the team working on the client's cutting-edge technology, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the company's global data center expansion and the development of innovative cloud solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Fiber Network Testing:
- Conduct testing on fiber-optic cables, fiber links, and related telecom infrastructure to validate signal strength, attenuation, and performance.
- Perform end-to-end testing on fiber-optic networks, including both single-mode and multi-mode fibers, to ensure compliance with client's standards.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
- Use advanced diagnostic tools such as OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), optical power meters, and fiber analyzers to locate and resolve fiber-related issues in the network.
- Perform fault isolation and root cause analysis on fiber network performance issues.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Create and maintain comprehensive test documentation, including test plans, results, and logs, in line with clients’s project standards.
- Report on fiber-optic performance metrics and ensure that all test findings are documented accurately.
Collaboration with Engineering Teams:
- Work closely with system engineers, network architects, and project managers to support the design and deployment of fiber-optic networks for clients’s data centers and cloud infrastructure.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure fiber network specifications are met and integrated correctly with the broader telecom infrastructure.
Continuous Improvement:
- Provide feedback to the engineering team on fiber-optic performance and reliability, recommending improvements or alternative solutions as necessary.
- Stay updated on new fiber-optic technologies, tools, and best practices, applying this knowledge to improve testing and troubleshooting processes.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all fiber testing activities adhere to industry standards and Client’s internal protocols.
- Follow strict safety guidelines to protect both personnel and equipment during testing and maintenance tasks.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience with fiber-optic network testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Proven experience working with fiber testing equipment, including OTDRs, optical power meters, and fiber analyzers.
- Experience with large-scale data center and telecom network infrastructure, preferably in cloud computing or enterprise-level deployments.
Technical Proficiency:
- Strong knowledge of fiber-optic cable types, fiber optic connectors, and fiber splicing.
- Familiarity with network protocols and standards (e.g., ITU-T, IEEE) related to fiber-optic communications.
- Proficient in fiber network performance metrics such as signal loss, reflectance, dispersion, and throughput.
Certifications:
- Fiber Optic Association (FOA) or similar certifications (e.g., CFOT, CFOS/O) highly desirable.
- Relevant safety training (e.g., electrical safety, PPE) would be an asset.
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly document and report test results.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with cloud-based platforms.
- Familiarity with automated testing tools and network monitoring systems.
- Experience with fiber-optic testing in large-scale telecom or cloud infrastructures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team.

- This is a contractor role based at a large Project site(s).
