Location: Abilene, TX

Contract Duration: 6 years (Contractor), 5 days onsite, 12 hour shifts (day & night available)

Project: Datacenter Project (Telecom Infrastructure & Cloud Services)

Position Overview:

Vivid is seeking a highly skilled Fiber Test Engineer to join our team as a contractor for the one of a kind datacenter Project. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing testing, validation, and troubleshooting of fiber-optic networks and associated systems, ensuring the highest level of performance and reliability for critical telecom and cloud infrastructure. As part of the team working on the client's cutting-edge technology, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the company's global data center expansion and the development of innovative cloud solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Fiber Network Testing:

  • Conduct testing on fiber-optic cables, fiber links, and related telecom infrastructure to validate signal strength, attenuation, and performance.
  • Perform end-to-end testing on fiber-optic networks, including both single-mode and multi-mode fibers, to ensure compliance with client's standards.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Use advanced diagnostic tools such as OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer), optical power meters, and fiber analyzers to locate and resolve fiber-related issues in the network.
  • Perform fault isolation and root cause analysis on fiber network performance issues.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Create and maintain comprehensive test documentation, including test plans, results, and logs, in line with clients’s project standards.
  • Report on fiber-optic performance metrics and ensure that all test findings are documented accurately.

Collaboration with Engineering Teams:

  • Work closely with system engineers, network architects, and project managers to support the design and deployment of fiber-optic networks for clients’s data centers and cloud infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure fiber network specifications are met and integrated correctly with the broader telecom infrastructure.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Provide feedback to the engineering team on fiber-optic performance and reliability, recommending improvements or alternative solutions as necessary.
  • Stay updated on new fiber-optic technologies, tools, and best practices, applying this knowledge to improve testing and troubleshooting processes.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure that all fiber testing activities adhere to industry standards and Client’s internal protocols.
  • Follow strict safety guidelines to protect both personnel and equipment during testing and maintenance tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience with fiber-optic network testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Proven experience working with fiber testing equipment, including OTDRs, optical power meters, and fiber analyzers.
  • Experience with large-scale data center and telecom network infrastructure, preferably in cloud computing or enterprise-level deployments.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Strong knowledge of fiber-optic cable types, fiber optic connectors, and fiber splicing.
  • Familiarity with network protocols and standards (e.g., ITU-T, IEEE) related to fiber-optic communications.
  • Proficient in fiber network performance metrics such as signal loss, reflectance, dispersion, and throughput.

Certifications:

  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) or similar certifications (e.g., CFOT, CFOS/O) highly desirable.
  • Relevant safety training (e.g., electrical safety, PPE) would be an asset.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly document and report test results.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with cloud-based platforms.
  • Familiarity with automated testing tools and network monitoring systems.
  • Experience with fiber-optic testing in large-scale telecom or cloud infrastructures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a distributed team.

Work Environment:

  • This is a contractor role based at a large Project site(s).
  • You will be expected to work within tight deadlines while maintaining high standards for quality and accuracy.
  • A collaborative, dynamic, and fast-paced environment working alongside experts in the fiber-optic and cloud computing space.

Benefits:

  • Competitive contractor rates
  • Opportunity to work on a highly visible, large-scale, and innovative project
  • Possibility of extension or full-time conversion based on performance and project needs
