The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a detail-oriented Senior PPS Electronics Engineering Associate. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and developing documentation and equipment for ALS Personnel Protection Systems (PPS). This role requires a strong understanding of electrical design standardization, relay-based systems, control cabinet setup, component selection, inventory management, and collaboration with engineering teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- AutoCAD Drafting: Produce detailed drawings for both maintenance support and new project development, adhering to ALS Electronic Engineering Group drafting standards.
- Document Maintenance: Regularly update and maintain technical documentation to reflect changes in product features or specifications.
- Quality Assurance: Perform thorough quality assurance checks on all technical documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with standards.
- Legacy Drawing Conversion: Transition ALS PPS AutoCAD schematics to the new lab standard PTC Windchill PLM software.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers to gather information and ensure alignment on technical documentation requirements, integrate designs into engineering CAD tools, and ensure seamless collaboration.
- Work Instructions: Draft job orders for technical staff for troubleshooting, maintenance, and equipment installation or removal.
- Component Management: Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), manage inventory, and oversee the procurement process of required components.
- Process Improvement: Continuously assess and enhance documentation processes, tools, and templates to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Design Presentations: Present design concepts and updates during team technical meetings and design reviews.
- Communication: Clearly articulate design issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
This position requires hands-on experience with relay-based systems, a background in electronics engineering, and strong skills in proactive problem-solving and strategic decision-making within established practices and policies. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing ALS and ALS-U objectives by delivering high-quality technical solutions for various electrical designs, mentoring team members, solving technical challenges, and ensuring the reliable and efficient implementation of ALS and ALS-U projects.
What is Required:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or higher.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical design, with a focus on relay-based or PLC-based systems and control cabinet setup.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and schematic drafting.
- Strong understanding of electrical design standardization practices.
- Experience in selecting components and maintaining inventory of spare and new parts.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to electrical engineering documentation.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to present designs and articulate design issues clearly in team settings.
- Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to lead small teams, manage junior staff, and collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and stakeholders.
