NDE Research Engineer
ATI, Inc invites applications for a full-time NDE Research Engineer to begin immediately. The anticipated candidate will work forthe Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The work location is in McLean, Virginia.
We are interested in exploring innovative applications of NDE and structural monitoring (SM) technologies in inspections of highway infrastructure assets (e.g., bridges, pavements, tunnels, and utilities). The candidate will work on a research study of using various NDE tools for load rating of severely deteriorated corrugated metal pipes. The candidate will also work on a research project to explore innovative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, e.g., reinforcement learning, for quality control of pavement crack images. Candidates with relevant educational and research expertise in NDE, SM, and AI are welcome to apply.

The candidate will join a diverse research team at the FHWA NDE Laboratory. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research in a collaborative environment to fulfill the research missions of the FHWA NDE Laboratory. The candidate shall be proficient in multi-task management to ensure projects are delivered on time. The candidate shall also have sufficient skills in writing technical reports and delivering oral presentations to communicate the research results. The candidate, if hired, will be subject to standard background checks and drug tests required by the federal government.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An earned masters degree in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Effective verbal, presentation, and writing skills to convey research results to diverse audiences.
- Familiar with thermal, acoustic, and electromagnetic methods in NDE, such as infrared tomography, impact echo, ground penetrating radar, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An earned Ph.D. in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in one or more of the following areas:
- Applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence, e.g., reinforcement learning, in NDE/SM.
- Bridge and CMP load rating.
- Advanced numerical simulation (e.g., finite element) methods.
- Records of technical publications.

Working Hours: Normal Work Hours Monday Friday (40 hours per week).
Job Duties:
- Conducting independent research using various NDE methods for condition assessments of highway infrastructure assets, including bridges, pavements, and tunnels.
- Preparing reports, conference papers, and journal articles based on research results.
- Presenting research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborating with internal and external collaborators on NDE-related research.
- Responsible for the timely delivery of project milestones.
