Our client is looking for a Project Manager 1 to support an Environmental Research Initiative focused on the responsible development of solar energy through research into agrivoltaics (dual-use solar and agricultural systems). The role advances applied research, policy development, and stakeholder engagement at the intersection of renewable energy deployment and agricultural sustainability.

Position Overview
The Project Manager, Agrivoltaics will play an integral role in advancing research and policy related to the dual use of land for solar energy and agriculture. The role supports applied research and demonstration projects, coordination with agricultural and energy stakeholders, and development of strategies that align renewable energy goals with agricultural priorities.
The Project Manager will manage a portfolio of multi-year research and demonstration contracts, support technical working groups, collaborate across departments, and contribute to the dissemination of credible, science-based information to policymakers, industry participants, and agricultural communities. Pay Rate: $50+/hr
Primary Responsibilities
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

Serve as contract manager for a suite of multi-year agrivoltaic research and demonstration projects, including task tracking, review of deliverables and invoices, and coordination with research entities; may include occasional site visits.

Support management and coordination of an Agricultural Technical Working Group and related specialist committees.

Collaborate with interdepartmental teams to advance solar-agricultural research needs, technology innovation, and market characterization.

Support contractual and collaborative efforts with external partners to identify and advance state-level policies at the intersection of solar energy development and agriculture.

Develop and implement effective strategies to communicate scientific and technical information to policymakers, agricultural stakeholders, solar developers, and other key audiences.

Represent the organization at relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences as needed.

Identify opportunities to collaborate with external organizations to leverage funding, data, and dissemination of research findings.

Support performance tracking, metrics development, and reporting on program accomplishments.

Maintain and grow a network of stakeholders, market participants, policy experts, and research partners to inform program design and continuous improvement.

Perform other duties as assigned in support of Environmental Research team objectives.
Skills and Experience Required
-
Contract and project management experience; experience with solar energy or agricultural projects strongly preferred.

Relevant experience in agricultural-environmental issues, or energy-related environmental policy and research.

Demonstrated problem-solving ability, adaptability, and pragmatic decision-making skills.

Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong judgment, speed, and accuracy.

Ability to synthesize input from colleagues and external stakeholders into effective strategies and project designs.

Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.

Experience with public speaking, meeting and event management, and knowledge management.

Working knowledge of New York State agricultural policies, practices, and key stakeholders, and familiarity with policies related to implementation of the State's climate and clean energy goals.
Education and Qualifications
Required:
-
Bachelor's degree in agriculture, environmental science, biological or physical sciences, engineering, or a related discipline.
Preferred:
-
Advanced degree in agriculture, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.

Experience working with New York State agricultural stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, state agencies, research institutions, consulting firms, solar developers, or other influential entities.
Technical & Professional Competencies (Project Manager – Level 1)

Well-developed understanding of relevant technical principles and their application to environmental and energy programs.

Demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and implement projects with minimal supervision.

Experience contributing to program and project development, including competitive solicitations and co-funding efforts.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and manage all aspects of ongoing projects.

Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including guiding junior staff or interns when appropriate.

Effective communicator with the ability to prepare written materials and presentations requiring minimal editing.
