Job Description Job Title:Mechanic / Assistant Mechanic

Pay:$20.34 to $27.00 per hour D.O.E. and job level
Position Overview Clinton City is seeking a dependable and skilled individual to join our team as a Mechanic or Assistant Mechanic. This position supports the maintenance and repair of the Citys fleet of vehicles and equipment. The assignment of Mechanic or Assistant Mechanic will depend on the candidates qualifications, certifications, and experience.
- Assistant Mechanic:Performs routine maintenance and assists with inspections and repairs under supervision.
- Mechanic: Independently performs skilled diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment and may provide guidance to an Assistant Mechanic.
Both levels require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one during the probationary period, a Heavy Truck Safety Inspection Certification (within probation), and possession of basic hand tools. ASE certifications are not required but are considered a plus.
Responsibilities Shared Responsibilities (Both Levels)
- Perform maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.
- Conduct inspections to identify potential problems and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.
- Operate vehicles and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Assist with ordering parts and maintaining inventory levels.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities Mechanic
- Independently diagnose complex mechanical issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Perform major repairs on engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Conduct State-required safety inspections on heavy trucks and equipment.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Assistant Mechanic staff as needed.
- Assist with fleet management planning and preventive maintenance scheduling.
Qualifications Minimum (Both Levels)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a mechanical or automotive environment preferred.
- Ability to obtain CDL and Heavy Truck Safety Inspection Certification within probationary period.
- Possess basic hand tools.
- Basic knowledge of automotive systems and components.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
Additional Mechanic
- Minimum of 3 years professional mechanic experience working with vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Proficient in advanced diagnostics and repair across multiple systems (engines, hydraulics, electrical, transmissions).
- Valid CDL (or obtained within probationary period).
- Heavy Truck Safety Inspection Certification (or obtained within probationary period).
- ASE Certifications strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make sound repair decisions.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a combination of shop and outdoor environments, often around heavy equipment and machinery.
- Exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, and hazardous materials may occur; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used.
- The position requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and working in awkward positions.
- Lifting and carrying of parts and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds is required.
- Work may be performed in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
- Occasional overtime, evenings, weekends, or on-call assignments may be required to meet operational needs or respond to emergencies.
